After a wild two days of games, the action settled down a little bit over the weekend's games. The big stories were in Philadelphia and Phoenix. In Philly, it was a thrilling pitchers duel between Jake Westbrook and Tim Hudson, tied 0-0 going to the top of the 7th when Jim Thome slammed a pinch-hit 3-run homer to center for a 3-0 Bombers lead. The A's clawed back to tie it thanks to a Chase Utley homer in the 8th and then a sac fly and a 2-out Derek Jeter error in the 9th. However, Bombers manager Lou Piniella elected to stay with Westbrook into extra innings and he rewarded his manager by coming back from a leadoff walk in the 10th to excape the inning unharmed. Jeter and Carlos Delgado added RBI singles in the 11th to go ahead 5-3 for the Bombers and Mariano Rivera nailed down the 9th for the save. Westbrook pitched an amazing 10 innings, throwing 122 pitches and notching the win. Philadelphia got a great performance from Randy Wolf the next day for the 8-1 win.

In Phoenix, the Phoenix became the last team to play their home opener, beginning the XBL era at Chase Field against Houston. It wasn't long for the ballpark to see it's first XBL homer as Carlos Guillen led off the game for the Planets with a solo shot to right. However, Phoenix struck back thanks to a 2-run shot by Chris Burke. Brett Myers pitched 6 innings of 1-run ball and a sac fly provided insurance for the 3-1 win to start their home schedule on a good note. The next night the Phoenix broke out the lumber, exploding for 13 runs, including 2 homers and 5 RBI by Manny Ramirez in a 13-4 rout of the Planets. Garrett Atkins went 4-6 and also homered in the win.
