A Little Bird Told Me (posted: 19/August/2003)
When we caught wind of something newsy, it has become acceptable and common parlance for us to attribute our privy to "the little bird" so as to avoid having to disclose the source of our information.

Nobody has told me before, but could it be that we have down through the ages picked this creature's ingenuity from King Solomon who, by the inspiration of God's Spirit, wrote in Ecclesiastes 10:20 -- "Do not curse the king, even in your thought; Do not curse the rich, even in your bedroom; for a bird of the air may carry your voice, And a bird in flight may tell the matter.

Even walls are known to have ears. So, the best thing to do, if we have something to say about another person, is to say only good things.

Be Diligent! (posted: 16/August/2003)
There was once a physical education teacher who exhorted his students to "be organized", especially when lining up for stretching exercises. Little wonder, the man himself spotted an ever neatly-combed hairdo and impeccably neat dressing of T-shirt, sport shorts and footwear. And, his hair never seemed to be out of groove even after the warm-up exercises before his boys had their rowdy-rough soccer game. Boy, he certainly was diligent in living up to his oft-repeated motto.

Truth be told, our diligent efforts is vital for our well-being. Let King Solomon shares his observations with us:

"The hand of the diligent will rule, but the slothful will be put to forced labor." -- Proverbs 12:24

"The slothful man does not roast what he took in hunting; but diligence is a man's precious possession."
-- Proverbs 13:4

"The soul of the sluggard desires and has nothing; but the soul of the diligent shall be made rich." -- Proverbs 14:23

"In all labor there is profit, but idle chatter leads only to poverty." -- Proverbs 14:23

Seeking for Success
Nowadays, we are hard put to select a book, talk or seminar on "Success", especially of the financial kind, which have sprouted like wild mushrooms. Be that as it may be, success is not something altogether foreign to those who lived on this earth much earlier than our sojourn here.

When Abraham was old, well advance in age, and his wife, Sarah, had died, he made the oldest servant in his house take an oath to bring back with him a bride for Isaac (the son whom God had promised to Abraham and Sarah). The bride must be from Abraham's kindred in Mesopotamia and she must move over to live with her husband-to-be rather than have him live with her in her own country.

Upon reaching the city of Nahor, the servant rested his camels by a well of water at evening time, the time when women go out to draw water. As the story unfolded, the servant succeeded in choosing Rebekah as the wife for his master's son. We can read of his secret for success at the well in Genesis 24:12 ~ 14 -- "Then he (the servant) said, ' O Lord God of my master Abraham, please give me success this day, and show kindness to my master Abraham. Behold, I stand here by the well of water, and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water. Now let it me that the young woman to whom I say, ' Please let down your pitcher that I may drink' and she says, 'Drink, and I will also give your camels a drink' -- let her be the one whom You have appointed for Your servant Isaac. And by this I will know that You have shown kindness to my master."

It's timely for us to ask ourselves: Where is God's place in my quest for success ?
