Mercredi Octobre 6th 1993: En le route encore.
We will start down the coast to-day. It is very windy but sunny. Judy is not feeling well and is not happy about going. We start into Soulac-sur-Mer to see what alternatives we might have, but after cycling for a way, Judy felt better and decides she can manage after all, so off we go. We have each had a bad day, not wanting to go on. With encouragement (or coercion) from the other two we have managed to keep going and I think we will make our destination now, come what may. The truth of the matter is, what choice do we have at this point? There are no trains here and I have not seen any buses either.
The wind blowing the sand onto the road like snow.
It was tough cycling because of the wind, even in behind the pine forest. When we turned west toward the coast it was vicious. We had the best to come. Where the road ran right along the coast it was like I imagine a sand storm in the desert would be like. I tied my bandana around my face so I could breathe without eating sand.
The wind is blowing so hard we have to walk and push our bikes for awhile
After about a kilometer of this we stopped at Montalivet-Les-Bains, a small almost deserted town. We treated ourselves to a banana split. We continued straight on the road thinking we would get onto a bicycle path. It turned out to be a dead end for us, as it was only a hiking path. Back we went to the highway and on toward Hourtin where we found a hotel right in the center of town. 370 francs. This town is situated on Lac d'Hourtin et de Carcans (a very large lake where there are a lot of boats and a considerable sized marina. We walked down to the water front to the Office de Tourisme. The shops were closed as it was off season. Back in the town we found a store and bought a bottle of wine for our nightly toast to the gals back at St Mary's.
For dinner I had some wonderful Moules (steamed mussels with a herb sauce), et une truite for a main course. Then to bed to get rested for another big day.
55km.
