I have followed the sport of bodybuilding since I got my first publication back in the summer of 1968. I can honestly say, its my all-time favorite sport and hobby. Bodybuilding is a unique sport, regardless if you are a competitive bodybuilder or a collector of memorabilia. Whether you pick up a barbell or an old muscle magazine, it can become somewhat addictive. I know our collecting hobby ranks well below, say, collectors of coins, baseball cards etc., but I don't put much thought into rankings. I know many of you have large collections and you continue to add to it. Some of you specialize, while some like myself seek a little bit of everything. No matter the genre, or what its called, i.e. Bodybuilding, Muscledom, The Iron Game, Muscle and Strength, its basically all the same. Our sport and hobby has a fascinating history. Current bodybuilding magazines from time to time feature stories on legendary bodybuilders and strongmen. More and more books, courses etc. are now being reprinted. Joe Weider even reprinted the first issue of Your Physique magazine several years ago. This is fine, but nothing can take the place of the original. The original will cost you more but in certain cases, its worth it. Honesty is very important when you are buying, selling or trading muscle and strength memorabilia. You should tell the person you are dealing with the true condition of the item(s) and if its the original or reprint.
On the Internet you can now view thousands of photos of bodybuilders, strongmen and vintage publications. As collectors and fans, we appreciate the current mags and the Internet on keeping us updated on the sport and its history. Regardless of your association with bodybuilding, be it collector, fan, historian or competitive bodybuilder, one must admit it is a fun and interesting hobby.
