SYSTEM WARS

Sure Enough, here were are Midway into 2000 and things are heating up in the Console Wars, but the big battle has yet to be waged. By years end we will see the debut of another next generation system, the Playstation 2 here in the United States, but looming on the horizon is Microsoft and it's gaming powerhouse, The X-Box. Nintendo, will also be debuting information on Dolphin and it's new Gameboy Advance at SpaceWorld in Japan this August. The Dreamcast remains the first pioneer in the US Market, but sales in Japan of this system have waned significantly.

First and foremost on many gamers minds is Playstation 2, this highly anticipated hardware sequel the highly successful Playstation console. It's scheduled for release in America on October 26, 2000. You can bet Video Gamer X has already pre-ordered this one. There will also be many launch titles to choose from, including some decent looking RPG's. (Of Squaresoft caliber? Probably not, but worth a look anyway.) Playstation 2 will feature backwards compatability with previous original Playstation games, and play DVD movies, which is definitely a plus in the system's favor. It is formidable indeed. (Specs are listed below the Paragraph) It has been said that many of the launch titles don't actually take full advantage of the Playstation 2's hardware, and based upon what I've seen of the games, they don't seem too much better than anything I've seen on the Dreamcast, but that's not to say things will not be getting better from here, because remember, we're talking about the first generation of released games. If anything in the near future shows the true capability of the Playstation 2, it will be Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. If you have a friend with a cable modem, go to IGN and download their 100 MB movie of the E3 video and you will be astonished that what you are seeing is even a game.
