Steering Head Adjustment Nut Socket GL1200 and GL1500
I also have to give credit where credit is due, Thanks Ken Chaplin GWRRA # 17460

Basically what you are trying to make is a Spanner Socket. The HONDA version has four (4) posts sticking out from it. Two (2) posts are more than enough as you are only going to torque the nut to 14 ft lbs. What you want to end up with are the two (2) posts that protrude 5mm from the end of the socket. The posts must be 2.5mm wide and have a dimension of 1 5/8" between the "inside" flats.

1. buy a 1 3/8" (36mm in my case) deep well socket. It has to be deep to get around the steering stem.

2. Grind and/or cut the socket so that the posts are exactly across from each other first. You do this by grinding down the material about 1/4" on either side of where you want the post to be. You are removing metal from the socket on either side of where you want the posts to be. Line them up with the center of the socket. Don't worry about getting them exactly right on the grinder. You can use a good rat-tail file for the finishing work. A Dremel Tool works well also.

3. after you get the post widths right, you can use a file to go for the 1 5/8" inside distance between the posts.

Remember ----------- it doesn't have to be pretty. It just has to work.
