Wally Gonzales'
"Opening Finale"

by Jojo Soria de Veyra

Wally's Blues (197_?). Probably the first electric guitar sonata by a Filipino that made this his last, WB amply exploited the orgasmic possibilities of the blue notes in rock and the concerned instrument's delays, feedback, echo, etc. virtues. More recent electric guitar etudes by Pinoys like Triaxis' "I Need Sleep" or Noli Aurillo's "A Christmas Prayer" are more like Jeff Beck or Joe Satriani to Gonzales' Jim Page. Nonetheless, may I call for an anthology instrumental project involving Pinas' electric guitar greats? To include "Wally's Blues" as an opener or finale, of course. (4/04)
