VW 181 Facts & Figures

Gearbox ratios

Ratios listed below are for gearboxes fitted to VW 181s. Depending on destination, gearbox ratios could differ. For example, VW 181s destined for Europe and the USA were geared higher than those for Germany and Mexico.

Gearbox code letters

The transmission code letter is stamped on a rib between the final drive and the shift mechanism on the right-hand side. One example has transmission type number 113, code AB. A typical code may be: AB 24 04 7, where AB is the type code, 24 the day of manufacture, 04 the month and 7 the last digit of the year. This transmission was therefore manufactured on 24th April 1977.
