Summary
The story takes place during the Song Dynasty of China and focuses on two generations of the Truong's Family. For years, the war between China and Mongol has been a nonstop tragedy for commoners. During this chaotic time, there are seven heroes fighting for justice and helping innocents. These people grew up together and have been trained by one master; they are closer and loved each other more than biological siblings. On one of his trips, the fifth one, Truong Tuy Son(Vu Linh) meets An To To(Ngoc Huyen) and falls in love. Unknown to him, she is also the person who hurt his third brother. At one of the fighting circle gathering events, Kim Ma Su Vuong Ta Ton(Chi Linh) steals Do Long blade and kidnaps Truong and An. Shipwrecks, the three are trapped on an island. Truong and An get married and give birth to a baby boy named Truong Vo Ky (also starred by Vu Linh). Seven years later, Truong and An finally have the chance to return to mainland. Upon returning, people force them to reveal Ta Ton's whereabout. To keep their promise, the couple commit suicdie and leave behind their young son.
Years later, Truong Vo Ky becomes a well-known hero. He meets and falls in love with the Mongol's Princess Trieu Ming(Tai Linh). Because of the different backgrounds, their love runs into many obstacles. At the same time, Chu Chi Nhuoc(Thoai My) also loves Vo Ky and tries to find different ways to win his love. Steals Do Long blade and kills Han Ly, she tries to frame Trieu Minh for such doings. Despite numerous of problems, Vo Ky and Trieu Minh finally end up with each other. On the boat to a faraway land, Vo Ky fulfills his third promise to Trieu Minh and draws her eyebrows for her.
Review
Of course after watching TVB 1980's version, no other remakes can compare with it. However, Vu Linh and Tai Linh are really cute in this movie. Out of all of the Chinese Kung-Fu classics that have been made into Vietnamese Opera, this is one of the best. The plot does not go through dramatic changes which is good. The only downside from this movie are the fighting scenes - which need huge improvement. For this reason, I tend to stay away from Vietnamese opera wuxia movies.
Below is a stolen poem written by someone with the nickname of 'huyet_ma' in the Old TVB Forum. He had especially created this poem for the character Trieu Minh:
Em một đa tr mi
Sang giu khng mn đến
La bỏ một giang sơn
ể cng anh phiu lng
Như cnh nhạn tung bay
Khung trời thơ mộng ấy
