| When i first came to install my first Head Unit in my Volvo some 3 years ago, it took me four days! Basically, i had no idea how to do it, and i had even less of an idea where to start with the wiring already in the car. Any of you who are about to begin this project for the first time should be well prepared and not in a hurry- that is if you want to do it right the first time! Firstly, i would get together a selection of tools that you will need before you start- that way you aren't rummaging away in the garage midway through looking for a wire stripper! Heres a short list of what you should have handy. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Step One- Removing the factory unit | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Because it has been a while since i did the job, i managed to find instructions on another site on how to remove the factory radio- with photos of course! So check this link for the first step. My apologies for not doing it myself- but i thought this site showed it well :-) | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Step Two- Wiring | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Once the unit has been physically removed from the dash console, remove the wiring from the radio. In some models there is a wiring harness that clips into the radio, in other models the wiring may run directly into the back of the unit. Either way, unless you plan to purchase a wiring harness adapter, simply cut the wires, leaving enough length for you to wire up the new unit. Ensure you don't lose track of any of the wiring, as well as the antenna cable. Once you have the old unit completely out, push the front console panel back in to give you more room to work with- pushing the seats back will give you more space if you require it. The next step is to match up all the wiring- for this you will need the wiring code for the existing wires and your new wiring harness from the new Head Unit, which should have the various wires labeled. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Rear speakers are a little tricky, as some models came without and others with different colours. I had to run my own wires as there were no rear speakers. If you are installing aftermarket rear speakers at the same time, run that wiring through at this time. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Connecting the wiring | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| I generally recommend crimping connections, for strength, longevity and relative ease to connect and disconnect. If you dont have a crimp tool, get one! They are well worthwhile. I personally dont like soldering when I install car systems- i just dislike it. Each to his/her own! | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
