Tragedy Divine was given birth in 1990 by Jörg M. Knittel (guitar), Sven Podgurski (guitar), Bernhard Altmann (bass) and Frank Zube (drums) under the name Variety Of Arts.
After several auditions Gerrit Mutz (vocals) joined the band in the summer of 1991. In early 1992 they entered the Mainstreet Studio in Fautspach (Germany) to record their debut demo 'Dreams Of Perfection' which gained them a lot of enthusiastic response in the underground media.
Due to the high standard of songwriting and Mutz's unique style of singing they were often compared to bands like Psychotic Waltz or Fates Warning though the band itself never tried to sound like one of the bands mentioned above but to create their very own kind of Metal.
In 1993 they recorded a new song called 'Gardens Of Mischief' for the Peace Eater Vol.3 Compilation. Again the critics were very pleased with the young uprising metal-outfit.
Variety Of Arts did a lot of gigs in Germany and one of their most successful ones saw them opening for Donor and Psychotic Waltz in Ludwigsburg in front of more than 500 metal maniacs.
In the spring of 1994 Variety Of Arts changed their name into Tragedy Divine with the aim to deliver more power metal orientated music. Not denying their progressive roots but to include also influences like Agent Steel, Liege Lord, Hellstar or Hallows Eye. Soon after that Tragedy Divine entered the studio to record their second demo called 'Apostles Of Deceit' in only twelve hours. Songs included were 'Seize Control, 'Veils Of Solemn Black', 'I Married A Witch' and 'Tragedy Divine'.
