The nucleus of HOLLOW began to grow in the early 90s when URBAN WIKSTRÖM, THOMAS NILLSON and ANDREAS STOLTZ started to play music together. Neither one of them had had any musical training, so the first steps towards musicianship were hard and laborious. After a couple of years MARCUS BIGREN joined the band, which at that time went by the name VALKYRIAN. It was the spring of 1992 and VALKYRIAN had played their first gig at Galaxen in Umeå, nowadays a major scene for hard-core bands from all over the world. In his teens MARCUS had been playing with some guys who later would form the group MESHUGGAH. The twin guitar line-up added new vigour and strength to the band and during a couple of years VALKYRIAN wrote songs, played gigs and recorded quite number of demos. The band decided to change name to HOLLOW when their first mini CD was under production. This word, which means "empty" or "a cavity" seemed to signify as well a state of mind as the solution to the same. If you feel hollow perhaps music can fill that void. The mini CD was well received in Sweden, The reviews were overall favourable (76 of 100 in Burrn!!) and the singing abilities of Andreas were praised. The major source of inspiration for Hollow is the NWOBHM, with bands like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. This was the music they grew up listening to.More recent bands that have inspired or influenced their song writing are, among many others, Queensryche, Metallica.
