| They
were having a party around at Joe’s when they realized that there
was no more beer left. No one was sober enough to go down to the bottle
shop. Then Jesus turned up and said, “Don’t worry, I’ll
fix things!” He grabbed a 44 gallon drum and filled it with water
and started filling up empty cans. When the blokes started to drink from
the cans it was VB beer. The party went on and no one drank and drove. |

In
1685 Mistress Caroline Mistleoak was accused of grand witchery against
the fair and godly peoples of Winkleham. Mistress Caroline Mistleoak was
put to trial and subsequently found guilty of engaging in the most heinous
of crimes; intercourse with the devil. The burning took place on a clear
starry night. Mistress Caroline Mistleoak was bound to a stake with brambles
built up around her body. Mistress Caroline Mistleoak was heard placing
a curse upon the village and later as the flames began to rise, she pronounced
that upon this night each year she would return from the grave and take
her revenge upon the peoples of Winkleham The local priest of the district, one Friar Judd, gathered the peoples of Winkleham together before the burning stake. He ordered the people to light candles and sing hymns to counter the witchery. From that night on the people of Winkleham gathered together each year at the same time and place with lighted candles and sung hymns. The date was the 24th of December 1685. And that ladies and gentlemen is how Carol's by candlelight came to be. |
