Ganakalanidhi Dr. Vinjamuri Varadaraja Iyengar

DK Nagarajan:

DK Nagarajan, the younger brother of DK Pattammal is a musician and music teacher in Washington DC, USA. His comments about Vinjamuri and his music, expressed on Friday, September 22, 2000 2:36 PM in Washington DC during the interview conducted by Vinjamuri Subash:

"Mr. Vinchamoori Varadaraja Iyengar, a musical giant, was indeed a very good friend of our family. We used to meet him often whenever he visited Madras to perform at music festivals. I have had the good fortune to listen to his music at many of these concerts. My sister Srimathy D.K. Pattammal also has great respect for him. In his days, he was one of the many great giants in the field of carnatic music. He was able to produce glamorous flourishes with his pleasing and melodious voice. He adopted his own technique of crisp and scintillating exposition of ragas. He had developed a style (bani) of his own and packed all the elements of traditional musical offerings into his bani. He has made a significant contribution to carnatic music.

When he visited his son Mr. Govindarajan in Washington DC, he expressed his desire to listen to me. I went to Mr. Govindarajan's house and sang a few songs. He sincerely appreciated my music. He was an excellent person whose qualities included appreciating and encouraging other musicians. His dedication to chaste classical music earned him fame and honour in the world of carnatic music. In sum, he was good family friend, a great musician, and a humble and polite person with great qualities."
