If you measured success by how many clone acts rose up around a major group, TLC would
have been as big as the Beatles in 1999. As it was, "Fanmail"
saw the trio return after a half-decade's absence just like they'd never left. The album hit home both musically
and commercially (to the tune of several million sold so far). No one else in modern R&B seemed quite as important
these past months.
