***PICK OF THE AWARDS***
The Guardian First Book Award, launched in 1999, aims to
recognise and reward new writing across fiction and
non-fiction. It reflects the wide range of writing on the
Guardian books pages and underpins the paper's commitment to
finding undiscovered writers waiting for that vital break.
The award, for first time authors, is open to books from
genres including fiction, poetry, biography, memoirs, history,
politics, science and current affairs. Here is the shortlist
of potential winners, announced on Saturday:

***1999 BOOKER PRIZE WINNER***
J.M. Coetzee's "Disgrace" has proved a popular choice for the
1999 Booker Prize. Lisa Jardine, who backed the winner, was
at the Guildhall and, in an exclusive article for Amazon.co.uk,
asks whether the grand old days of book prizes for serious
writing achievement have finally returned.

best new fiction and poetry books for children and to encourage
children to read and enjoy those books. The full shortlist is
