WORD FOR WORD: "HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS"
***********************************************
"All the Whos down in Whoville liked Christmas a lot, but
the Grinch, who lived just north of Whoville, did not. The
Grinch hated Christmas--the whole Christmas season. Oh,
please don't ask why, no one quite knows the reason. It
could be, perhaps, that his shoes were too tight. Or maybe
his head wasn't screwed on just right. But I think that the
best reason of all may have been that his heart was two
sizes too small." --The narrator of "How the Grinch Stole
Christmas"

NEW RELEASES FOR SALE
*********************
"Not for Ourselves Alone: The Story of Elizabeth Cady
Stanton and Susan B. Anthony"
(NR)
narrated by Sally Kellerman; produced by Ken Burns and Paul
Barnes
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00001IVFK/entertainmentsit
Ken Burns brings his tremendous documentary talents to "Not
for Ourselves Alone," the story of reformers Elizabeth Cady
Stanton and Susan B. Anthony and the development of the
suffragette movement. With archival footage, commentary from
historians, and readings of the women's writing, Burns and
coproducer Paul Barnes remind us of the roots of the women's
movement and show just how far we have come in such a short
period of time.

"Biography of the Millennium" (NR)
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0767022157/entertainmentsit
In one of the most ambitious projects of the "Biography"
series, A&E has chosen the one person they believe to be the
most significant individual of the past 1,000 years. Over
the course of the four-tape set, we countdown from 100
people who represent a cross-section of society and have
"changed our world in ways beyond imagining," ending up with
the most remarkable person of the millennium.

"Saturday Night Live 25th Anniversary" (NR)
starring Bill Murray, Billy Crystal, Steven Martin, and Adam
Sandler; produced by Lorne Michaels
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000214GE/entertainmentsit
Schwing! No Coke, Pepsi. Two wild and crazy guys! We're from
France. Oh-tay. Do these ring a bell? If so, then you won't
want to miss the 25th anniversary edition of "Live, from New
York, it's Saturday night!" And if you've been hiding in a
cave all these years (or perhaps are just too young to
remember the glory days of "SNL"), then this wonderful
collection will introduce you to such luminaries as Roseanne
Roseannadanna, Emily Littela, Jane (that ignorant slut), the
Coneheads, Samurai Swordsman, and so many more of the
wonderful characters created during the 25-year reign of
"SNL."

THIS MONTH'S TOP PICKS--HOLIDAY FESTIVITIES
*******************************************
We're getting tired of the old television holiday standbys.
Don't get us wrong, we still love "It's a Wonderful Life"
and "A Charlie Brown Christmas." But there's more out there,
so Amazon.com presents some options for those of you wishing
to get out of the holiday rut.

"It's a Wonderful Red Green Christmas" (NR)
starring Steve Smith and Patrick McKenna; directed by Rick
Green and Larry Schnur
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000INCK/entertainmentsit
Sleighs made out of Chryslers and explosive Christmas tree
decorations--as Red would say, this ain't Martha Stewart,
this is Christmas, Possum Lodge style. "Red Green" is the
popular Canadian show, viewed in the U.S. on PBS, in which
Red and his backwoods cohorts deliver dry humor and offbeat
sight gags so bad they're good. Follow Red's advice on this
festive video for the perfect holiday: "Just lower your
standards, and you'll have a happier Christmas."

"There's No Such Thing as a Chanukah Bush, Sandy Goldstein"
(NR)
directed by A. Paige Goldberg
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0966558707/entertainmentsit
This Emmy Award-winning film examines the longing felt by
many young Jewish children living in the U.S.: the desire
for a Christmas tree. Robin, in the 23-minute "There's No
Such Thing as a Chanukah Bush, Sandy Goldstein," wants a
tree more than anything, despite her mother's admonition
that Jews don't have them. Ultimately, she learns that
"there's a difference between celebrating something because
you believe in it and helping friends celebrate something
because they believe in it." This is a lovely story that
will appeal to young children and help them appreciate the
traditions of others.

"Burns and Allen Christmas" (NR)
starring George Burns, Gracie Allen, and Harry von Zell;
directed by Frederick De Cordova and Ralph Levy
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/6302497353/entertainmentsit
For those who don't know that George Burns had a career
long before "Oh, God!", "Burns and Allen Christmas" will be
a wonderful discovery. This holiday collection contains two
episodes of the show that ran from 1950 to 1958, featuring
George Burns as the straight man (believe it or not) and his
scatterbrained (to put it nicely) wife, whose constant flubs
and misunderstandings create laugh-out-loud scenarios. Burns
and Allen are clever enough to keep the grownups in stitches
and slapstick enough to entertain the kids.

"Flying Nun Christmas" (NR)
starring Sally Field and Marge Redmond; directed by Jon
Anderson and Lou Antonio
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/6304139632/entertainmentsit
What's a Christmas without an airborne holy woman? Before we
"really, really liked" her, Sally Field played a young
novice who had a remarkable habit (so to speak) of taking
flight. This volume of the "Flying Nun" series features two
holiday episodes, one in which she tries to satisfy Sister
Olaf's desire for snow in San Juan and the other in which
she must convince a Jewish girl that she does not want to
become a nun. This set is a definite break from the
traditional.

"Are You Being Served? Special Holiday Collection" (NR)
starring John Inman, Mollie Sugden, and Frank Thornton;
directed by Bob Kellett
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/6304646127/entertainmentsit
The staff of the ladies' and gentlemen's section of the
Grace Brothers Department Store do the holidays right on
this special collection of the 1970s British comedy "Are You
Being Served?" In "Father Christmas Affair," Mr. Grace
offers a 50-pound bonus to play Father Christmas, enticing
all of the employees to compete for the position. The
"Christmas Crackers" has the employees attending their
Christmas luncheon and dressing up for the holiday season.
This sitcom is slightly on the racy side, although many of
the sexual innuendoes seem rather tame by today's standards.

JENNIFER FOX AND THE NEW AMERICAN FAMILY
****************************************
Defining the American family is no longer the easy task it
once seemed to be. Jennifer Fox, though, tackles the issue
head-on with her PBS documentary miniseries "An American
Love Story." In it, she follows the day-to-day life of an
interracial family over the course of two years.
Amazon.com's Television & Documentary editor Jenny Brown
spoke with Fox about her groundbreaking show.

THE GIRLS WITH SOMETHING EXTRA
******************************
Just call them the girls with something extra. From Nick at
Nite's campy revivals of "Bewitched" and "I Dream of
Jeannie" to WB's sizzling hit "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" to
family-valued "Touched by an Angel," television gives girl
power a new--and prominent--place in prime time. Amazon.com
contributor N.F. Mendoza takes a look the magical women of
the small screen.
