WHAT WE'RE READING
******************
"Hunting Badger"
by Tony Hillerman
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0060192895/entertainmentsit
In "Hunting Badger," Tony Hillerman's 13th novel featuring
Navajo police officers Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee, the pair
track the right-wing militiamen who pulled off a violent
heist at an Indian casino. As always, Hillerman's evocation
of the people and subtly beautiful places of the Southwest
enrich a fast-paced narrative rife with plot twists.

"Saving Faith"
by David Baldacci
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0446525774/entertainmentsit
Faith Lockhart holds the key to a massive scandal that could
bring down the U.S. government. While she realized going to
the FBI with her profound secret was risky, she never
imagined the enemies she was making--including a carefully
cloaked splinter group of the CIA who wants her dead. On the
run after a failed assassination attempt, her only friend in
the world is a stranger, a private detective whose
connections to Faith are as shadowy as her own future.

"Harm Done"
by Ruth Rendell
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/060960547X/entertainmentsit
Ruth Rendell never disappoints, and her 19th chief inspector
Wexford mystery, "Harm Done," is another brilliant piece of
detective fiction. When two girls disappear from the town of
Kingsmarkham (and then mysteriously reappear), Wexford
discovers that all is not quite what it seems.

PENZLER PICKS FOR NOVEMBER 1999
*******************************
Each month, Otto Penzler will be selecting six or more of
his favorite mysteries, both old and new. Among his first
list of picks, Otto had this to say about John Connolly's
"Every Dead Thing":

"Okay, we all know the biggest, hottest and perhaps best
book of the summer was "Hannibal" by Thomas Harris. But, and
I'm serious here, it may turn out to be no better than the
best serial killer book I've read in years--this tough,
violent, but beautifully written first novel by an author so
talented that it's difficult to believe he's so young. The
novel is about a New York cop named Charlie "Bird" Parker
whose life is filled with agony and despair about the
unsolved murders of his wife and daughter. When he needs to
track the serial killer known as The Traveling Man, he lusts
for revenge but can hardly cope with the depths of cruelty
and depravity into which he must immerse himself. It is
truly a white-knuckle book that you won't soon, if ever,
forget. And here's a bonus: he writes New York scenes as if
he lived here all his life (and I know, having spent 50
years here) and then does the same for scenes set in
Louisiana (at least I think he does, because they sure feel
right)."

Sleep," Amazon.com now has beautifully reproduced facsimiles
of these and nine other mysteries produced by Otto Penzler's
specialty press. Quantities are very limited, and these
books are only available though Amazon.com and Mr. Penzler's
