KIDS AND FAMILY VIDEO: TOP 10 OF 1999

Editor, Doug Thomas

Sound the trumpets, raise the curtain, and prepare that VCR. Here are the top videos for kids and families for 1999. How does one judge the best videos? Quality and entertainment value are key considerations, but with youngsters, the repeatability factor must be calculated. Kids will want to watch a video several times--so the parent needs to see value in the product. Here are 10 great tapes that will pass the test when it comes to grand entertainment.

1. "The Iron Giant" (1999) (G) VHS Clamshell or widescreen version
starring the voices of Jennifer Aniston and Harry Connick Jr.; directed by Brad Bird
Hands down the best movie of the year for families, and arguably the best movie of the year--period. Director Brad Bird ("The Simpsons") delivers the tale of a boy and his robot, the title character that falls from the sky into the golden autumn of Maine, circa 1957. A great movie with enough sly humor, wonder, and warmth for everyone. You'll watch this one again and again. (Ages 5 and older) Read more

2. "The Storyteller: Sapsorrow/The Luck Child" (1999) (NR) VHS
In the excellent PBS "Great Performances" biography, "The World of Jim Henson," the late Muppet master's collaborators state that one of Henson's more complete visions was achieved with his HBO series "The Storyteller." If you view this set of two episodes, available on video for the first time, it's easy to see why. A beautiful mix of fantasy and adventure creates true family entertainment for ages 6 and up. There's only one other video with this wonderful mix of fantasy for families, and it's...

3. "The Storyteller: The Soldier and Death/A Story Short" (1999) (NR) VHS
...this video containing two more grand episodes from the series. There were eight episodes in all, and we anticipate release of the last two tapes in the series in the new year. The style is similar to Jim Henson's theatrical features "The Dark Crystal" and "Labyrinth," but the tone of these videos (based on fables from other countries) is more complex and not as cute, suggesting Henson was aiming for a different audience--families, not just kids with parents in tow. 4. "Babe: Pig in the City" (1998) (PG) VHS Clamshell
So what if it's not as cute as the original? George Miller ("The Road Warrior"), who cowrote and produced "Babe," delivers a sequel that is out of this world and breaks new ground in story, style, and tone. The littlest tykes may not understand what's going on (and the film does push its G rating with its Roald Dahl-type darkness), but older family members (and adults) will get their entertainment bucks' worth fourfold. The sequel is as gutsy as Babe's new spiked collar, and if you thought the animals performed like humans last time, just wait until you see this. Gene Siskel named this film 1998's best, and it's easily last year's most overlooked film. (Ages 6 to adult) Read more

5. "VeggieTales: Madame Blueberry" (1999) (G) VHS
This was the breakout year for "VeggieTales." The funny and warm computer-animated video series starring Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber were exclusively in Christian bookstores. Now their videos are available to a larger audience for the series that sticks to their motto of "Sunday morning values, Saturday morning fun." This new video teaches a lesson in thankfulness. Madame Blueberry is quickly carried away by the new Stuff-Mart in the neighborhood instead of being thankful for what she has. (Ages 3 and older) Read more

6. "The Wizard of Oz" (1939) (G) VHS Clamshell or gift set
starring Judy Garland; directed by Victor Fleming
Another hard-to-find classic returns to video. This edition is the best yet, with a new print that was made when the film toured theaters for its 60th anniversary, and an Angela Lansbury-hosted documentary looking at the film's legacy. There's even a gift set with a script reproduction, still photos, and reproduced theatrical posters for your favorite elf. (All ages) Read more

7. "Mulan" (1998) (G) VHS Clamshell
starring the voices of Ming-Na Wen, Eddie Murphy, and B.D. Wong
After the so-so "Hercules," a new breed of Disney animators (from the new Florida unit) creates this splendid tale of a Chinese girl who saves her family and country. "Mulan" is solid entertainment, transcending the old-fashioned gender politics found in "The Little Mermaid" and boasting a much stronger and more dramatic story. Another bonus: a battle in the snowy mountains as thrilling as the best Hollywood live-action sequences. (Ages 5 and older) Read more

8. "Ever After" (1998) (PG) VHS Clamshell
starring Drew Barrymore and Anjelica Huston; directed by Andy Tennett
Here's something so inspired, fun to watch, and great for families that, of course, it didn't do well at the box-office. This lively retelling of the Cinderella story starts off wonderfully--a distant relative of the real Cinderella tells the Brothers Grimm they got it wrong--and keeps on going, right through to its climax, as this modern day heroine rescues herself. Drew Barrymore is perfect in the lead. The only missteps, a few four-letter words that earned the film a PG-13 rating, have been edited out of this PG video version. (Ages 6 and older) Read more

9. "Blue's Clues: Blue's Discoveries" (1999) (NR) VHS
Nickelodeon's biggest hit for the 2- to 7-year-old set produced several videos this year. All the tapes included one new show and one from the series. A key ingredient to its success is the show's premise, which allows kids to find clues and talk back to the characters. In this episode, Steve and Blue perform simple experiments as they look for clues. When the video is over, kids will certainly want to try these tyke-friendly experiments at home (making a tornado with two pop bottles for example). Read more

10. "A Bug's Life" (1998) (G) VHS Clamshell or widescreen
In the battle of the animated bug movies, the winner is "A Bug's Life." The folks at Pixar are animation stars who weave engaging, wonderful stories with their powerful computers. It's not a home run like their Oscar-winning "Toy Story," but "A Bug's Life" has more than enough spirit to make young and old cheer. The video contains both sets of the hilarious end-credit "outtakes" and a smile-inducing Oscar-winning short, "Geri's Game." (Ages 5 and older) Read more
