MYSTERY AND THRILLERS: TOP 10 OF 1999

Editors, Patrick O'Kelley and Naomi Gesinger

This year, some of the biggest names in the mystery and thrillers genres proved that their fame is well-deserved: the latest offering from Scott Turow and Sue Grafton easily grabbed spots in this year's list. Dennis Lehane and Janet Evanovich added fifth installments to their brilliant (but very different) series and ended up among this year's top 10 too; as the new millennium dawns, we expect both of these writers to enter the select pantheon of mystery authors deemed "classic." Robert Harris and Jeffery Deaver's thrillers took us back to the cold war and forward, into the Y2K countdown, respectively. And, as always, several newcomers (and newcomers to mystery, like Dave Barry) also warranted special accolades. We eagerly await the next offerings from Alice Blanchard, Denise Mina, and Elliott Pattison, among others whose books could without doubt have been included here.
