CHRISTIAN BOOKS: TOP 10 OF 1999
Editor, Doug McDonald
With the millennium upon us, 1999 has been a year of reflection in Christian books but also a year for looking ahead. We were treated to fresh perspectives into the lives of two seminal figures of the church--Martin Luther and Saint Augustine--as well as biographies of two 20th-century icons--Henri Nouwen and Pope John Paul II. Philip Yancey showed us how to appreciate the oft-neglected Old Book, and Charles Colson issued a clarion call to Christians in the postmodern world. And then there were stories. Pastor Jim Cymbala described his remarkable Brooklyn church, Ruth Harris detailed the history of an ancient Catholic shrine, Thomas Cahill focused on the life of Jesus, and Anne Lamott shared her quirky and grace-filled faith. So without further ado, here are my picks for the best Christian books of 1999.
1. "Desire
of the Everlasting Hills: The World Before and After Jesus"
by Thomas Cahill
After chronicling the Irish and Jewish contributions to Western civilization, Thomas Cahill turns to the Man from
Galilee. "Desire of the Everlasting Hills" recounts the life of the historical Jesus--and brilliantly
places his teachings in the multi-culti context of the ancient world.
