SPIRITUALITY AND INSPIRATION: TOP
10 OF 1999
At the end of the millennium I find myself drawn to the intimacy and courage of real-life human stories. As a result, two of my favorite spirituality books were memoirs, starting with Anne Lamott's hilarious and tear-wrenching "Traveling Mercies." Lamott used her excellent storytelling skills to convey a simple and profound truth--that small, everyday acts of faith inevitably lead to a lifetime of spiritual grace. Months later the esteemed natural scientist Jane Goodall released her spiritual autobiography "Reason for Hope," once again using rich storytelling to show us all why we can and must find a reason for hope.
My other top picks deserve equally high praise, from the hauntingly beautiful "Eternal Echoes" to the pragmatic and provocative "Sabbath." Each of these 10 books has brought dignity, fresh thinking, and clear intelligence to the genre of spiritual growth. To these generous authors and editors I offer my sincere admiration and gratitude. --Gail Hudson, editor, Amazon.com Delivers Spirituality and Inspiration
