WORD FOR WORD: EDDIE ALBERT *************************** "You shouldn't put pressure on [children or animals], but Arnold put the pressure on us. He would get very angry. He'd start to scream and jump up and down if he didn't like the writing." --Eddie Albert on working with Arnold the pig in "Green Acres" Read more of Amazon.com's interview with Eddie Albert at Television & Documentary NEW RELEASES FOR SALE ********************* "Doctor Who: The Keys of Marinus" (NR) starring William Hartnell, William Russell, and Jacqueline Hill; directed by Christopher Barry and Morris Barry http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/6305438420/entertainmentsit Television's longest-running science fiction series has starred many men as the Time Lord, Dr. Who. This six-episode series is from the first season, when the good doctor was played by William Hartnell. He and his mates travel in their craft, TARDIS (Time and Relative Dimension in Space), to an island of glass surrounded by acid, where they must retrieve four microcircuits--the keys to the Conscience of Marinus, a computer that has eliminated evil from the minds of men except, of course, from the bad guys. This set is a must-own for die-hard fans of this cult classic. "Great Expectations" (PG-13) starring Ioan Gruffudd, Justine Waddell, and Charlotte Rampling; directed by Julian Jarrold http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0764006401/entertainmentsit "Great Expectations" has hit the screen--both big and small--in many incarnations, but this Mobil Masterpiece Theatre version distinguishes itself with its superb cast and its faithfulness to Dickens's text. Ioan Gruffudd stars as Pip, the young orphan who spends his years trying to prove himself worthy of the beautiful Estella (Justine Waddell), who is far above his station. Miss Haversham is played with exquisite contempt and arrogance by Charlotte Rampling. "Saturday Night Live: The Best of Chris Farley" (R) starring Chris Farley and the cast of "Saturday Night Live" http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1573626163/entertainmentsit Whether he was Matt Foley, Motivational Speaker, or the fry- happy Gap girl, Chris Farley kept audiences roaring with his over-the-top characterizations and his dead-on parodies. His years on "Saturday Night Live" were some of the show's finest, rejuvenating the sketch-comedy program after seasons of lackluster casts. THIS MONTH'S TOP PICKS: CLASSY BRITISH BROADS ********************************************* Is there anything those British birds can't do? They can whip us up a fab meal, entertain us with their self- indulging binges, humor us with their satire, tap into our sappy side by reigniting an old romance, and even get a bad guy or two! "Two Fat Ladies" (NR) starring Clarissa Dickson Wright and Jennifer Paterson Vol. 1 & 2: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000EZZ8/entertainmentsit Vol. 3 & 4: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000EZZ9/entertainmentsit Picture this: Two, uh, pleasingly plump older women motoring across Britain in their Triumph motorcycle and sidecar, stopping at castles, breweries, and mess halls to prepare scrumptious meals for their guests. This isn't your ordinary cooking show (Martha Stewart would *not* approve); it's more comedy than how-to. These gossipy women keep you laughing with their chatter (Clarissa seems to have a somewhat checkered past) as they prepare meals laden with butter, cream, and all those other yummy foods your doctor tells you stay away from. Even if you heed doc's advice, you can still indulge yourself with these witty and fun fat ladies. "Absolutely Fabulous: The Complete Collection" (NR) starring Jennifer Saunders, Joanna Lumley, and Julia Sawalha; directed by Bob Spiers http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/6304179073/entertainmentsit Normally watching your friends get boozed up and drugged out is a boring way to spend the evening. Edina and Patsy, however, do it with such a lack of grace and charm that they're not only absolutely fabulous, they're absolutely hysterical. The sensible teenaged Saffron is the only adult, forever trying to make her mother, Edina, grow up. Follow their antics--complete with plastic surgery, a gay ex- husband, and more promiscuity than in the era of free love-- in this boxed set of the BBC series, and discover the joy of life way, way beyond the bounds of decency. "French and Saunders: Living in a Material World" (NR) starring Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders; directed by John Birkin and Kevin Bishop http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/6305036497/entertainmentsit French and Saunders are the creators of "Absolutely Fabulous," but before turning their wit to Patsy and Edina, the two had their own comedy series, "French and Saunders." The "Living in a Material World" collection is humor with a brain, with send-ups of everything from Fellini and Bergman to Dr. Quinn, "Baywatch," and Bjork. "As Time Goes By, Vol. 1" (NR) starring Judi Dench, Geoffrey Palmer, and Moira Brooker; directed by Sydney Lotterby http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000AOB3/entertainmentsit Dame Judi Dench stars with Geoffrey Palmer in this BBC comedy of two "mature" ex-lovers who run into each other after 38 years. Both are grayer, wiser... and more cantankerous. These first episodes set the stage for the pair, introducing their old romance and suggesting the possibility of rekindling the sparks--as well as the constant bickering. A finely acted show, "As Time Goes By" is the antidote for the bland Gen-X comedies of network TV. "The Avengers '65, Set 1" (NR) starring Diana Rigg and Patrick MacNee; directed by Jonathan Alwyn and Robert Asher http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/630539606X/entertainmentsit Diana Rigg kicks butt as the smart, stylish, and intrepid Emma Peel, partner to John Steed in the British Intelligence. Their fights are rarely run of the mill-- automated assassins, brainwashing, growing corpses--but all include the witty banter and skintight outfits the series became known for. The '65 season introduces the ravishing Mrs. Peel and the episodes here, which were never syndicated, are in the original black and white. ON TOP OF THE TROPICS: RESEARCH IN THE RAIN FOREST ************************************************** "National Geographic" takes you to the lofty heights of tropical canopies in its documentary "Rain Forest: Heroes of the High Frontier." At the helm of this adventure is scientist-adventurer Nalini Nadkarni, who took time out of her busy research schedule to chat with Amazon.com's Claire Campbell about what it's like high up in the trees. Television & Documentary GOIN' DOWN TO SOUTH PARK ************************ We're going down to South Park, gonna have us a time. And if you can't make it to the small Colorado town yourself, we've got the videos, DVDs, CDs, and books to make you feel as if you were in Mr. Garrison's class, right alongside Kyle, Stan, Cartman, and Kenny. But beware, these aren't for the faint of heart; Comedy Central's "South Park" cartoon series offers some of the raunchiest stuff around, which is why we love it so much. Television & Documentary ADVANCE ORDERS: COMING TO YOUR HOME SOON! ***************************************** "Noah's Ark" (NR) starring Jon Voight, Mary Steenburgen, and F. Murray Abraham; directed by John Irvin http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/6305468427/entertainmentsit Two by two they boarded the ark, and while this may not be a literal interpretation of the biblical story, it's certainly an elaborate one. Available July 27. "Saturday Night Live: A Tribute to Phil Hartman" (NR) starring Phil Hartman and the cast of "Saturday Night Live" http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1573626171/entertainmentsit Phil Hartman was one of the most multifaceted comedians around, playing everything from Bill on "News Radio" to voicing Troy McClure (you may remember him from such educational films as "Fuzzy Wuzzy's Guide to You Know What"). Relive some of his finer SNL moments in this tribute to the much loved comedian. Available August 10. "Bob and Margaret, Vol. 1-3" (NR) starring Bob and Margaret http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/6305513384/entertainmentsit He's a dentist, she's a chiropodist. They're British, they're animated, and they're hilarious. What more could you want? Available August 17. ****** Did a friend's birthday or an important anniversary catch you by surprise last year?
