HAVE YOU HEARD?
***************
"Big Trouble"
by Dave Barry
Running time: 7 hours, 5 cassettes; unabridged
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1567404596/entertainmentsit
Running time: 3 hours, 2 cassettes; abridged
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1567408648/entertainmentsit
In his first novel, Pulitzer-prize winning humorist Dave
Barry takes a stab at the crazy South Florida crime genre.
Barry reads his own words here and shows perfect comic
rhythm doing so, as he effortlessly segues from voice to
voice. In fact, hearing the author's renditions of female
and teenage voices--not to mention a Latino housekeeper and
Russian gangsters--is half the fun. Barry keeps the plot
simple and the tone light, which makes listening less of a
compromise to reading than with some mystery audiobooks. (In
other words, less wear and tear on the rewind button in an
attempt to follow the plot.)

"Isaac's Storm"
by Erik Larson
Running time: 5 hours, 3 cassettes; abridged
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0375408827/entertainmentsit
Running time: 5 hours, 4 CDs; abridged
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0375409335/entertainmentsit
Reading in his signature dispassionate style, narrator
Edward Herrmann brings an eerie calm to this powerful
chronicle of the deadliest storm ever to hit the United
States--a huge and terribly destructive hurricane that
struck land near Galveston, Texas in September 1900. Author
Erik Larson recreates the events leading up the disaster in
astonishing detail, tracing the thoughts and actions of
Isaac Cline, a scientist with America's burgeoning U.S.
Weather Bureau. Cline's unwavering confidence--"In an age
of scientific certainty one could not allow one's judgment
to be clouded"--blinds the meteorologist to the deadly
onslaught about to be unleashed. Herrmann's calculated
performance reflects the impending doom and dangers inherent
to an unquestioned and absolute faith in science.

"Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone"
by J.K. Rowling
Running time: 8 hours, 6 cassettes; unabridged
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0807281751/entertainmentsit
Three books into J.K. Rowling's amazingly popular Harry
Potter series, book 1, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's
Stone," arrives in audio. Reader Jim Dale delivers an
excellent range of voices to the characters, from
well-meaning Hermione's soft, earnest voice to Malfoy's
nasal droning, from Professor McGonagall's crisp brogue to
Hagrid's broad Somerset accent, and from snarling Mr. Filch
to p-p-poor, st-tuttering P-Professor Quirrel. Harry Potter
fans of all ages--Muggle or not--will enjoy curling up with
a few chocolate frogs, a box of Bertie Bott's Every Flavor
Beans ("Alas! Ear wax!"), and this marvelous, magical
audiobook.

HEAR AN INTERVIEW WITH "'TIS" AUTHOR FRANK MCCOURT
**************************************************
In "'Tis," Frank McCourt follows up his Audie Award-winning
performance in "Angela's Ashes" with another brilliant
reading as he chronicles his return to post-World War II New
York. His lyrical tones are wise but not weary; he's
survived life's challenges to tell his tale. "'Tis" is
Grammy material, a perfect example of how an author's voice
can enhance the written word. Hear McCourt discuss
the recording process in an audio interview.

CLASSIC LITERATURE ON AUDIO
***************************
John Cleese's vibrant narration of C.S. Lewis's "The
Screwtape Letters" helps turn Lewis's classic read into a
classic listen. In fact, as our classic collection
indicates, most fine literature can be found in audio form,
from Jane Austen's "Sense and Sensibility" and John
Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath" to "The Brothers
Karamazov" by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. Hear the best in
literature with these audiobook classics.
