WHAT WE'RE READING
******************
"David Goes to School" (Ages 2 to 6)
by David Shannon
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0590480871/entertainmentsit
David, the out-of-control monster-child from David Shannon's
Caldecott Honor Book "No, David!" is back... and ready to
disrupt the class. Young David yells answers out of turn,
pulls pigtails, stares out the window, cuts in line, and
draws on his desk. Comical, childlike illustrations examine
the strangely appealing demon-boy at eye level, which is
especially disgusting as David stretches an enormous mass of
bubble gum from his pointy-toothed maw. After an intense day
of gleeful misbehaving, however, he stays after school and
washes all the desks until they sparkle. The day ends with a
gold star and a pat on the head... something that any child
(or adult) would find satisfying.

"The Bad Beginning" (Ages 9 and older)
by Lemony Snicket
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0064407667/entertainmentsit
"The Bad Beginning" begins badly for the three Baudelaire
children, and then gets worse. Their misfortunes commence on
a gray day at Briny Beach when Mr. Poe tells them that their
parents perished in a fire that destroyed their whole house.
While it's true that the unfolding events are unbelievably
bleak, and things never turn out as you'd hope, this funny,
macabre novel is reminiscent of Roald Dahl (remember "James
and the Giant Peach" and his horrid spinster aunts), Charles
Dickens (the orphaned Pip in "Great Expectations"), and
Edward Gorey (in "The Gashlycrumb Tinies"). Young readers
will fly through this fast-paced, suspenseful story relayed
by a personable, playful narrator. And take heart, this
horribly charming book is the first of a series.

"Which Witch" (Ages 9 and older)
by Eva Ibbotson
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0525461647/entertainmentsit
Arriman the Awful, Wizard of the North, needs a wife. How
else can he procure a wizard baby to carry on the family
tradition of blighting and smiting? Arriman dreads the
thought of marrying a witch, however: "A great black crone
with warts and blisters in unmentionable places from
crashing about on her broom! You want me to sit opposite one
of those every morning eating my cornflakes?" Readers will
be thoroughly enchanted by this recent rerelease of award-
winning author Eva Ibbotson's clever 1979 fantasy,
originally published in England and shortlisted for the
prestigious Carnegie Medal.

MORE FRESH INK

"Mr. Tanen's Ties" (Ages 5 and older)
by Maryann Cocca-Leffler
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0807553018/entertainmentsit
Mr. Tanen's famous ties make every day a holiday. On rainy
days, he wears a tie with umbrellas on it, and on
Frankfurter Friday, well, you can imagine what that tie
looks like. When he's ordered to stop wearing the crazily
distracting ties, the whole school gets the blues. This
sweet, slightly wacky story of the triumph of individualism
will please children on many levels.

"Robert Crowther's Most Amazing Hide-and-Seek Numbers Book"
(Preschool and older)
by Robert Crowther
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0763608092/entertainmentsit
Is 90 fleas a lot of fleas? Well, if you're a dog, yes, but
in this interactive counting book, youngsters will see that
90 fleas actually fit into a very small space. As Robert
Crowther introduces the joy of numbers to the preschool
crowd with creatures great and small, parents will be
pleased to discover that he takes us flipping and flapping
all the way to 20, then counts up in tens until the grand
finale--100. Adults will enjoy this wonderful book just as
much as children.

"The World Almanac for Kids 2000" (Ages 9 and older)
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0886878403/entertainmentsit
Did you know that it was once illegal to hitch a crocodile
to a trading post in the state of Michigan? Or that actress
Claire Danes and children's author Beverly Cleary share an
April 12 birthday? No matter. By the time you finish reading
this colorful, 336-page almanac, you'll know how to make an
origami whale; how magnets react to other magnets; how to
translate your name into binary code; and how hot the sun is
(hint: very).
