WORD FOR WORD: AN INTERVIEW WITH COMPOSER PHILIP GLASS
******************************************************
"I know when the music should be far from the image, when it
should be behind the image, when it should be underneath
it. When it should be on top of it. All the physical
relationships of place can be translated into a relationship
of music to image. Any spatial relationship that you can
imagine, I can make, in music, an image." --composer Philip
Glass on his new score for Bela Lugosi's "Dracula"

NEW AND NOTABLE SOUNDTRACKS
***************************
"An American Love Story"
Original Television Soundtrack
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000JQZA/entertainmentsit
The forthcoming public television series "An American Love
Story" follows the life of an interracial couple, Bill Sims
and Karen Wilson, for more than a year. Its soundtrack? The
music of Sims--a smoking blend of R&B, blues, and jazz--and
a host of Motown greats. If love is in the air, this is a
great soundtrack for it.

"The Acid House"
Original Soundtrack
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000I5RV/entertainmentsit
"The Acid House" is based on three short stories from Irvine
Welsh, the author of "Trainspotting." Not surprisingly,
drugs and youth culture find their way into this movie, but
so does some great alt-rock. The Chemical Brothers, Oasis,
Nick Cave, Beth Orton, and even Oasis lend cuts to this
moody compilation.

"Mickey Blue Eyes"
Original Soundtrack
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000JMGM/entertainmentsit
Mobster flicks are pretty predictable in concept: throw in a
few vintage tunes from Louis Prima and Dean Martin and
you're set. "Mickey Blue Eyes" isn't too different from that
mold, but Basil Poledouris does lend it a great score that
keeps the Italian theme going strong. If you're looking for
some lounge music, this is your soundtrack.

"The Iron Giant"
Original Soundtrack
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000JNIY/entertainmentsit
Animated film "The Iron Giant" features a soundtrack that
seems straight out of a John Waters movie. Edd "Kookie"
Byrnes, Jimmie Haskell, and the Nutty Squirrels all sound
like thrift-store record finds of the century, while the
Ames Brothers and Mel Torme add some star appeal. Fun and
funny.

"Brokedown Palace"
Original Soundtrack
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000JSB5/entertainmentsit
They said it couldn't be done, but here we have--finally--a
compilation soundtrack filled with alt-rock that actually
has a theme. Nelly Furtado, Solar Twins, Joi, Asian Dub
Foundation, and even P.J. Harvey all lend credibility to
this dark collection of tunes that combines the sounds of
the Far East with those of the West. Even if these aren't
household names, the music is moody and great.

DIGITAL DOWNLOAD
****************
Brad Mehldau was last heard on the soundtrack for "Eyes Wide
Shut." But now, in our Free Downloads area, you can download
two of his tunes and hear what he's been up to when he's not
contributing cuts to Kubrick films. While you're there, be
sure to check out "Believe" from "Run Lola Run," also
available for download. We currently offer more than 20 free
digital downloads from more than a dozen major artists.

NEW AND NOTABLE MUSICALS
************************
"The Grass Harp"
Original Broadway Cast
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000JMKR/entertainmentsit
Based on a novella by Truman Capote, "The Grass Harp"
features a solid score written by Claibe Richardson with
lyrics by Kenward Elmslie. The show only lasted for a week
on Broadway in 1971, but it's still a worthy musical to own,
with catchy tunes and some great vocalists.

"The Nightingale"
Original London Cast (1982) with Sarah Brightman
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000JT5X/entertainmentsit
In the early '80s, before Sarah Brightman found fame working
with--and wedding-- Andrew Lloyd Webber, she performed the
title role in "The Nightingale." Based on a Hans Christian
Andersen tale, "The Nightingale" features music and lyrics
by Charles Strouse. But let's face it: the real reason to
buy this London cast recording is to hear Brightman in her
youth, performing as a high-trilling bird. It's a disc
Brightman fans shouldn't pass up.

"Promises, Promises"
Original MGM Broadway Cast Recording
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000JRM6/entertainmentsit
Hal David and Burt Bacharch produced a ton of great music
we're still trying to get out of our heads, but the musical
"Promises, Promises" is unfortunately one of their less-
remembered projects. The 1968 Broadway production features
Jerry Orbach in his prime (he won a Tony for his portrayal
of Chuck Baxter here) and at least one tune nobody has
forgotten--"I'll Never Fall in Love Again," which was a hit
for Dionne Warwick.
