Greetings from Amazon.com Delivers VHS New Releases
Editor, Doug Thomas FEATURED IN THIS E-MAIL: * Word for Word: Stanley Kubrick * Top New Releases * Widescreen Releases * The Hitchcock Century * Advance Orders: Coming to Your Home Soon! * Amazon.com's Video Essentials WORD FOR WORD ************* "Just because you're a perfectionist doesn't mean you're perfect. Kubrick's impulse has been to master every element of the filmmaking process. Stanley's good on sound. So are a lot of directors, but Stanley's good on the color of the mike. Stanley's good about the merchant he bought the mike from. Stanley's good about the merchant's daughter who needs some dental work. Stanley's good." --Jack Nicholson on his director for "The Shining," now available with a rarely seen documentary about the making of the movie. "The Shining": http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000IQBM/entertainmentsit The seven-film "Stanley Kubrick Collection": http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000JMO6/entertainmentsit TOP NEW RELEASES **************** "The Truman Show" (PG) starring Jim Carrey and Ed Harris; directed by Peter Weir http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/630518299X/entertainmentsit http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000IRED/entertainmentsit (widescreen) The Oscar flap over this film's non-nomination for Best Picture or Best Actor obscures the true reason to celebrate this film--its originality. Writer Andrew Niccol simply came up with one of the freshest ideas out of Hollywood last year. Peter Weir's elegant direction and Jim Carrey's tragicomic performance are just the icing on the cake. "South: Ernest Shackleton and the Endurance Expedition" (NR) documentary by Frank Hurley http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/6305444501/entertainmentsit Readers have rediscovered the amazing 1914 Antarctica expedition fueled by new books about the adventure. This video is not a hastily assembled TV docudrama. This is the actual silent film that played theaters in 1919 and was shot by one of the crew members on the ship Endurance, stuck in ice for two years. Restored for optimum picture quality, this is a vital document of one of mankind's great stories of survival. "The Butcher Boy" (R) starring Eamonn Owens and Stephen Rea; directed by Neil Jordan http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/079073642X/entertainmentsit One of those challenging and great movies that no one ever thinks they make anymore. They do; it's just that people don't see them. Young Eamonn Owens portrays the title character, who becomes unglued in his shattered home life. Director Neil Jordan ("The Crying Game") is right in his element with this dark comedy laced with fantasy and a very sharp edge. "Forgotten Silver" (NR) directed by Peter Jackson and Costa Botes http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/6304909764/entertainmentsit It's "Spinal Tap" for the classic-movie lover. Peter Jackson ("Heavenly Creatures") created this fake documentary about Colin MacKenzie, a film pioneer way ahead of this time. Jackson recounts MacKenzie's odd film discoveries during the age of silent film and searches for the massive sets built in the jungle for the unfinished masterpiece, "Salome." Movie pros and even Leonard Maltin appear to give the film a real sense of authenticity. It also teaches us a great lesson about widescreen, or letterboxed, videos. Even though "Ghostbusters" is not an epic like "Lawrence of Arabia," it's easy to see how the film suffers in the normal pan-and- scan format. The camera whooshes back and forth to capture actors speaking in the pan-and-scan version. Sometimes just a part of an actor is seen as he speaks. The widescreen version doesn't merely make the movie look better; it makes it look right.
