Walrus

There is one
species of walrus, but two
races. The Atlantic walrus and
the Pacific walrus.
The Pacific
walrus is
largest.
Tusks are highly
developed canine teeth.
1/3 of weight is blubber, which is 2 1/2 inches
thick, covered by a 2 1/2 inch thick hide.
Both sexes have tusks.
Can live up to 30 years.
Females are 1200lbs.
Can grow to 10 feet long.
Males weigh 2700lbs
and are 12 feet long.
Walrus eat
shellfish, which
they scoop up with
their tusks.
Walrus live in groups,
which can be 1000 or more, and can
eat 3000 shellfish
a day.
There blood
vessels in
their skin will
expand to remove
body heat, which in turn,
cools them down.
Both the Pacific and Atlantic Walrus
can adapt themselves to hot or cold temperatures.
In the heat the walrus
will turn a rose color
while basking in the sun.
Habbits
are
almost
identical.
The can dive for no longer than 12
minutes, and up to 250 feet deep.
