Read the following text very carefully and solve the exercises:

My House, My Home H

My name is Michael and I live in a small town in Portugal with my wife Margaret and my little boy – he’s just 21-months old! We have just moved to a bigger flat.

Before Fred was born we lived in a single-room apartment, which was very nice but had no place to put all our things and no garage either. It became too small when our son grew up and started walking. We wanted more space for his toys and he needed more room to run around the house.

Now we live in a flat with three bedrooms, however we used the third one to create an office because as teachers we do a lot of paper work at home.

There is also a kitchen with a balcony (verandah), a bathroom and a living-room with another balcony heading to the front of the building. There’s a cupboard too. We haven’t got a garage, unfortunately. However, now we have two bedrooms, an office at home and the cupboard to put all we need.

    Daily Routine

My name is Thomas Brown and I’m British. I was born in Newcastle. However, I do not live in England. I married Francesca. She is Italian so I am now living in Sienna, Italy. I work as a tourist guide in a travel agency. They asked me to work here because I speak Italian fluently and they deal with lots of English-speaking tourists.

My daily life is not very common, comparing with nine-to-five jobs. Many people do the very same things all day long, all days of the week ever since they start at nine in the morning, until they go home, at five.

I never begin my day at the same time. When I spend my day at the office I start at about ten but quite often I have to go out with groups of tourists to visit famous places in Sienna or other major cities. In this situation I have to start very early to go to all the places I want, usually at eight-thirty.

My meals are never the same, or at the same times. When I am in town I always find some time to have lunch at a restaurant or to go home. If I am travelling I usually eat a sandwich and drink a fruit juice. Very frequently I arrive late in the evening and I don’t even have dinner.

When I need something that I know is usually expensive, I prefer shopping in a big shopping centre because it will be a little cheaper and I’ll have more options to choose from. If I need something more common like everyday food, I prefer the traditional shops because frequently the products are more natural, less industrialised.

Pubs are an important part of life in Britain. People go to the pub to relax, meet friends, and sometimes to do business (1).

But pubs are not open to everyone, and they are not open all the time. People under the age of 14 cannot go into pubs. And they are only open from about 11 am ("opening time") until 2.30pm, and 5.30 p.m. until 10.30 or 11 p.m. ("closing time"). When it’s closing time, the barman calls "Time!" or "Time, gentlemen, please!"

You can buy most kinds of drink in a pub: beer, lager, all kinds of wine, spirits (2), liqueurs, fruit juice and soft drinks. Beer is the most popular drink and there are many different kinds.

You ask for beer by the "pint" (a little more than half a litre) or the "half a pint". When people buy beer they ask for "bitter" (strong beer), "mild" (less strong), or lager. Some people just say the name of the maker (3): " A half of Double Diamond, please." Or "Two halves of Export, please."

Most pubs do not sell hot drinks, like coffee or tea, but many sell hot and cold food. Pub food (called "pub grub") is often good, is cheaper (4) than most restaurant food, and you don’t have to leave a tip(5) But you do have to go to the bar to get your food and drink. There are no waiters in pubs.

    LONDON TRANSPORT

Public transport in London is expensive. The fare (1) depends on the length of the journey; you cannot buy books of tickets in advance. Children under 16 pay half, and those under five travel free. You usually buy bus tickets from a conductor (2), but on some buses you pay the driver. Most London buses are ‘double-deckers’; you can smoke upstairs. On the underground railway (‘tube’) you buy your ticket from a machine or a ticket office, and give it up at the end of the journey. Not all trains from one platform go to the same place, so watch the signs. The last train leaves at about 00.15.

You can also buy a travel card, which is a ticket you can use for seven days to travel by tube or bus in the central zone.

I think that if I went to London as a tourist – and after reading the information from this text – I would prefer to buy a travel card and travel by bus or tube. First because it is used on the two most regular means of transport and then because I believe it would be a lot cheaper than buying tickets every time I needed to travel around town.
