Are you involved in some sort of social activity? Well, surveys all over the world have shown that many boys and girls of your age are. They may not be particularly interested in politics. But poverty, drugs, unemployment; disabilities, old age are among their chief concerns. And they think it is everybody’s duty to protect the Earth by conserving resources, reducing pollution and protecting endangered species.
They stopped believing governments are able to solve all these problems. That’s why they get personally involved and they enrol in Non-governmental organisations. There are thousands of them, some better known than others. Who has never heard of Greenpeace, Mèdecins Sans Frontière, with branches in many countries, and Amnesty International that does its best to help people in prison and to assure that they receive fair and humane treatment?
What can you do to help? The simplest way is to give your money contribution. But still more important, you can provide real action as a volunteer: raise funds, improve people’s education, write letters to call other people’s attention, give advice, collect clothes and other useful items for people in need, visit people in prisons, hospitals and homes for old people.
The Family Service League Volunteering has got two new very interesting programs.
One is for children 9 years old and up from single parent household. The volunteers are asked to mentor kids in need of additional guidance. With your contribution of just 2 - 4h each week, you can open new horizons and help a child make the right choices in today’s difficult world. Volunteers are provided with state–of–art training, supervision, support and appreciation. The volunteers gain valuable personal growth in this intensive program.
The other one is a volunteer opportunity you can do from the confort of your own home, by phone! Seniors in Northern Essex Region need your phone call to combat the loneliness and isolation that can accompany living alone. Phone Alert Volunteers have even saved lives by calling for help for their friend in need.

KEVIN’ STORY
My wife Kim had left me with little Francesca and I was devastated.
Francesca was two years old. I had to come to terms with my heartbreak at Kim’s rejection, as well as looking after a lively toddler (1). But there was no choice. My daughter needed me. But life as a single dad was hard.
The first time I tried to tie Francesca’s hair in a ponytail, it took half an hour. My efforts at ironing and cooking her sausages weren’t too bad, though. Skills I’d picked up in the army came in handy.
But soon I found that it was easier to negotiate an army assault course than shop with a small toddler.
The boredom of being stuck inside doing housework drove me mad. I loved her [very much] — but that didn’t ease the loneliness.
Suddenly the answer was staring me in the face — I needed to meet up with other single dads. I wrote to my local paper with the idea of forming a club, and soon I was overwhelmed with callers. ‘We should get together’ said one. ‘I know what you’re going through.’
Now a few of us who live nearby meet up every week and talk about ironing school uniforms and football to our heart’s content.
We also help some of the newer members through the rough times as they get used to being a single dad.
And although we argue about who’s going to win the cricket, there’s one thing we all agree on — we’ll always be there for our kids.
Francesca’s six now and we’re doing fine. I’m working part-time as a gardener while she’s at school.
I do get lonely sometimes, but I’ve learned that the rewards outweigh (2) the endless ironing and sleepless nights. The other day I watched Francesca tie her shoelaces for the first time. I wouldn’t have swapped (3) that moment for anything else in the world.

I’d never pick the babies up, I was too frightened. I was in the building trade, I had big hands and was clumsy (1). Babies were forbidden territory. They were woman’s work, that was that. And you’d never push a baby out in a pram (2). That was unthinkable for a man in my area. They used to call them Mary Anns, the guys who did it, the laughing stock (3) of the street. In the same way, I never changed their nappies. I was frightened they would roll off the bed or that I would hurt them in some way.
In those days, the man used to be the master of the house. What he said went, because he fetched (4) the money home. And when I married I carried on like this and my wife did as she was told because that’s how we were brought up. She might have a load of kids around her feet all day, but you still expected dinner on the table when you came home. The men did no housework whatsoever. And as for polishing and cleaning windows, you might do it secretly, but you dared not be seen. You might hang the washing out in the back yard but never in the front street because you would lose face. You’d lose your manly image if you were seen cleaning the front step. (…) You were just too frightened to break the rules in a close-knit (5) community like mine.
There were things I didn’t like. The men were the heavies and the kids were afraid of you. I’d get home from work and my wife would tell me a list of things to deal with: "Michael’s broken a window, Paul keeps beating Milly", and you’d have to [distribute] the punishment. You’d talk about it to your mates at work: "I had to give our Michael one last night, you know". Dad was the bad guy. Now I think I missed out on my children all through their young years. (…)
I didn’t get many kisses and cuddles (6) off them when they were young.

DAD’S HOLDING THE BABY
TIM’S STORY
When my wife Lara became pregnant with our first child, we decided straightaway that I would be the one to stay at home, looking after the baby. My mates thought I was mad. "You’re a brave man", one of them said. "I couldn’t handle all that."
But for us it made sense. Lara works as a teacher and would still get long holidays. I ran an interior-design business from home. I thought I could easily juggle both jobs. But it didn’t work out like that. The birth of our son Matthew was the most emotional moment in my life. Cradling this tiny bundle in my arms, I felt a huge sense of responsibility. "You come first now," I thought.
Babies demand attention all the time. You don’t realise what hard work it is until you become a parent. For me, shopping and housework were nothing new. But not the endless nappy changes, bottle-feeding and all those nappies again.
I’ve seen Matthew take his first steps and speak his first words. I find it fascinating, watching him progress. I’d do it all over again, too. Lara doesn’t feel left out. When she comes home, she gives Matthew his tea, bathes him and puts him to bed. She probably does more with him than most working dads do.
I don’t work much at home now but I do teach interior design part-time at the local college, which I enjoy.
Matthew’s arrival has changed my outlook on life. It’s brilliant to hear my mates - who thought I was mad - admit that they were wrong. Looking after Matthew gives me the best of both worlds. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

EATING IN SPACE
In the early days of NASA missions, in the 60s, astronauts used to complain about the unappetizing food and the very limited menu they were offered. They ate freeze-dried foods and drank semi-liquids stuffed in tubes. In the next decade, the 70s, food quality and menus increased, as did packaging. In Skylab, the first US space station (1973 - 79), there was a large interior area, where space was available for a dining room and a table. For the first time, the crew sat at table and used cutlery (knives, forks and spoons). But it was with the space shuttle missions in the 80s that things improved a lot. Now shuttle astronauts have an amazing choice of food items to choose from. They may eat from a standard menu or may replace items to accommodate their own tastes. They may even design their own menus.
Each astronaut’s food is stored aboard the shuttle 2 or 3 days before launch, and is identified by a coloured dot affixed to each package. When astronauts want to select their own menu, they have to do that five months before flight. All food is pre-cooked or processed so it requires no refrigeration and can be prepared simply by adding water or by heating in the oven. Food packages in containers can include soups, casseroles like macaroni and cheese and chicken and rice, and breakfast foods like scrambled eggs. Most of the fruits and fish as tuna and salmon are packaged in cans; puddings are in plastic cups. During a typical meal in space, a tray is used to hold the food containers. The tray can be attached to an astronaut’s laptop with a strap or attached to a wall. Without it food packages or containers may float in the micro gravity of space. Food is eaten directly from any container and astronauts use knife, fork, spoon and a pair of scissors to cut open the packages.

Gregory Gooch is a 27-year-old lawyer, working as the principal legal officer for the commission for the racial equality, a government organisation in Great Britain. I always wanted to be a lawyer, but never wanted a career where the principal issues were to protect people’s property and possessions, though that’s where the big money is in this profession. I wanted to make a difference in people’s lives, to provide legal services which would help bring about changes in the way different racial communities deal with each other. The Commission’s work is not so much about ending racism, as it is about promoting equal opportunity and eliminating discrimination, making sure people are not refused a job or a promotion because they are of a different origin. Britain is now a multiracial society where minorities have concerns and aspirations that have to be respected. You may not be able to change the way some people think, but you must make sure the law is respected and applies to everybody. (…) My work varies. Sometimes I have to help with court cases, sometimes I have to deal with immigration problems, sometimes I have to travel around doing seminars in companies about how to create an healthy atmosphere at work, where everybody’s identities are respected and nobody feels discriminated because they are black, or Asian, or Latin American. I also do some work with political refugees mainly from Middle Eastern countries because I can speak a little Arabic. (…) By the end of this year, I shall have spent five years in this job, so maybe it is time for a change. I am still young and have always wanted to enter politics and maybe run to Parliament. (…) If you want to make your country a better place, a career of public service is the best solution. In Cosmopolitan (abridged and adapted) |

Nuclear family, a group of persons united by ties of marriage and parenthood (1) or adoption and consisting of a man, a woman, and their socially recognized children. Also called elementary family, this unit was widely held (2), until recently, to be the most basic and universal form of social organization. Anthropological research (3) in the last 20 years, however, has illuminated so much variability of this form that it is safer to assume that what is universal is a nuclear family "complex" in which the roles of husband, wife, mother, father, son, daughter, brother and sister are embodied (4) by people whose biological relationships do not necessarily conform to the Western definitions of these terms. In matrilineal (5) societies, for example, a child may not be the responsibility of his biological genitor (6) at all, but of his mother’s brother, whom he calls father.

Family Life
Families were an important part of Victorian life (1). Many of them were large. In 1870, the average family had five or six children. Most upper and middle class families lived in large and comfortable houses. Each member of the family had a particular role to play.
The father was the head of the household. He was often a stern figure (2), who was obeyed without question. While he went out to work everyday, the mother looked after the house. In the middle class family, the children spent most of their time in the nursery (3), where they were brought up by a nanny. They might see their parents once a day, before they went to bed. When the children grew up, only the sons were expected to work. They joined the army, or trained to be parsons (4), doctors or lawyers. The daughters stayed at home with their mother. Their career was to get married as soon as possible.
[Preaching – and frequently also practising – the virtues of industry and thrift (5), the middle classes were the main beneficiaries of Britain’s economic expansion. Much of their new wealth (6) was expended on the home which, run with the help of several servants, usually housed an extended family. Its comfortable surroundings not only displayed (7) status, but also provided a sanctuary from the filth and human degradation beyond the front door.]
