trouble

I went back to Denver. Meanwhile I had met contacts while in the Military and began dealing drugs, something I am not proud of. and that led up to the events leading to my Convictions.

This is how I recall the events as they happened.

On approximately June 20, 1988. Around 2:00am I entered The residence of Francis Goddard located at 5520 Vallejo St. Denver, CO. At the time I was under the influence of Cocaine. I am a bit foggy as to my reasoning but if I recall, I was under the impression Randy Goddard, the victims son had stolen my shoebox with my Cocaine in it out of my car, and had hidden them in the victims residence. I entered the Home through an open window, I had removed the screen. I searched for my shoebox and not finding it, I took a money bag and a purse that it was attached to. I then exited the building. On June 29, 1988 I was charged with Second degree burglary of a dwelling (Class 3 Felony). A plea bargain was offered of Criminal attempt to commit burglary on a building. (Class 5 felony) I was given 3 years probation and restitution. On approximately June 21, 1988, about 12:30am. I entered the home of M. Ruth Peterson, located at 5700 W. Louisiana. Lakewood, CO. I was high on Cocaine at the time. (Keep in mind I had been up and high on cocaine for about 9 days at this point.) I have no idea why I went inside her house. The front door was wide open the screen door was shut. I had gone there looking for Laurie, Ruths Grand Daughter. Upon entering I stumbled around in the dark until my eyes adjusted. I had sometime during this picked up a decorative pillow. Going from room to room, I entered the room where Mrs. Peterson was resting. I bumped some object making a noise and she said What are you doing? This startled me and Heart pounding I threw the pillow at her and bolted from the room. I exited the house and ran back to where I had parked my car and drove away. From there I drove to 15th and hooker where a small store was. Upon exiting my vehicle I was approached by two officers that had just came around the corner. (They were looking for a suspect for a shooting happening moments earlier a block from the store.) After asking me routine questions and frisking me they ran a check on my and it came back with a bench warrant for petty theft. I was actually unaware of the warrant until that moment. The charge stemmed from a girl claiming I stole her wallet, I had it only because she had left it in my car when she was high, I just failed to return it to her. I pled no contest. I figured I could use the 10 days in jail to clean out and try to get help for my drug addiction. But anyhow While locked up in Denver County I was approached by Adams County about their charge to which I wrote a full confession leaving out the part about the Shoebox of Cocaine. I was also later the same day approached by Lakewood Detectives (Jefferson County), I wrote a full confession for them also. I was charged in Jefferson County, with Second degree burglary on a dwelling (Class 3 Felony), and theft from the elderly (Class 5 Felony) although I did not take anything I can remember But Mrs. Peterson was about 75 years old so they added that charge. I was not offered any plea bargains and took it all the way through trial. I never claimed innocence I just wanted the judge to reduce the charges but he did not and I received 8 years and 8 years to run concurrently in Community Responsibility Center (A Halfway House) on 04/10/1989 my sentence was revoked and I was re-sentenced to 5 years and 5 years to Colorado Department of corrections. I was given credit for time served of 657 days this being the total time I spent in county jails and the halfway house. I was remanded to the Authorities in Canon City Colorado and the Department of corrections and was release from custody on 06/30/1991 I spent 1 year on Parole and then was discharged.

Thats how I ended in Sterling which can be seen in the As an Adult page.

This is the series of events as I recall them. I at that time had a very serious Drug addiction and was not really in full mental capacity. I hope they are satisfactory but if not please call me at 712 621 5939 so I can immediately answer any questions you have. Thank you, Van K. Whittet.
