Summary
I
am a Lecturer of Computing at Petroleum Institute
in Abu Dhabi. Prior to that I was Amideast
consultant and CALL (computer-assisted language learning) coordinator at the Military Language Institute in Abu Dhabi
(1997-2003). As CALL coordinator for the Language Center at Sultan Qaboos University in Oman, 1985-1995, I
was manager responsible for setting up and running the Student Resource
Center. An ESL teacher since 1975, I have worked in Texas, Saudi Arabia,
and Hawaii in addition to Oman and the UAE. Extensive involvement in CALL since
1979 includes: CALL software development, research, CALL project leadership, numerous publications, and from
1995-1997 work with Authorware and speech recognition, among other
computer-based development tools, as Director of ESL Software Design at a
courseware publishing company in California.
I
have served on the editorial boards of major professional journals, including TESOL Quarterly and CALICO Journal, and I am currently
"On the Internet" editor of the TESL Electric Online Journal.
I was a founding member and first officially appointed chair of the CALL Interest Section in TESOL,
and currently serve as EVOnline Liaison to the Distance Education Sub-committee
of TESOL's Professional Development Committee and on the Executive Committee of
APACALL (Asia-Pacific Association for
CALL). Since 1996 I have organized and developed online language learning
projects resulting in two robust communities of practice based on the 'Webheads'
concept of personalized web pages and weekly synchronous online events
utilizing a variety of free multimedia synchronous communications tools.
I am a native speaker of English, married, with two children, both in college. I have traveled widely and can communicate in several languages, particularly French and Arabic. I have learned to converse in Arabic having spent 5 years in Saudi Arabia, 10 in Oman, and 6 in the UAE, and studied in Arabic language courses in each country.
