Card Extravaganza Workshop

Greeting Cards are miniature works of art! It is so much fun to work in a smaller, more tangible size as you create beautiful designs. A wide variety of techniques will be shown in his workshop: Constructing, painting, and collaging. I want the students to enjoy the process as well as the outcome of designing cards with thought and skill combined. Lettering artists will be able to add special touches as they create, but knowledge of calligraphy is not required. Everyone will be able to have fun designing unique greeting cards.

Barbara Close has been a freelance calligrapher, graphic designer, and instructor for a number of years and has a BFA in graphic design from California State University at Fullerton. Her work was included in the late Glen Epstein's Calendars and can be seen in Artful Book of Days Calendar sponsored by the Society for Calligraphy. She's designed several greeting cards for Marcel Schurman Co., Papyrus, and has also designed the logo head for Somerset Studio Magazine and an alphabet cartridge "The Calligraphy Collection" for ProvoCraft's Cricut die-cut machine. She currently teaches a year-long calligraphy program at her studio in Santa Ana, California, as well as on-going adult education classes in Cerritos, California.

  • 10 cardstock sheets (8.5"x11")
    (5 neutral/white solid colors & 5 dark colors)
  • Arches Text Wove (½ sheet)
  • Prang watercolor set
  • Pointed brush (#2 or #4 round)
  • Glue stick or other adhesive
  • Double-stick tape
  • Favorite embellishments |
    (e.g., ribbons, charms, threads, etc.)
  • Favorite calligraphic tools
  • An open mind and lots of enthusiasm

Text Box: Directions: Northbound (from the south) on Interstate 5: Take exit 189 and at the stop sign, turn left and continue west to the first intersection. Go straight through the intersection and continue along 30th Avenue. Turn left on Eldon Shafer Drive to access the east parking lots, or stay on 30th and take the first exit to the right after the intersection to access the west parking lots. Southbound (from the north) on Interstate 5: Take exit 189 and continue to the traffic light. Turn right at the traffic light and go straight until the next intersection. Turn right at the intersection. Turn left on Eldon Shafer Drive to access the east parking lots or continue to the first exit on the right to access the west parking lots.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Text Box: From Downtown Eugene: Take Willamette Street south to 29th Avenue and move to the left lane. Turn left on to 29th and move into the right lane. Go six blocks until 29th ends at Amazon Parkway and turn right. Move to the left lane and continue straight on Amazon through the intersection at Hilyard where Amazon Parkway becomes 30th Avenue (Albertsons on far right corner). Proceed east on 30th up and over the hill until the exits to Lane Community College appear on the right. The first exit goes to the parking lots on the west side of main campus. The second college exit leads to the parking lots on the east side of campus.
