.First let me start off by saying that IF...I was coming into Sandman, blind, no prior knowledge of the comic books, I would think this was a solid show (which I do regardless).
I waited until about 7pm Eastern time 8/5 to start watching the show so I could get through issue #16 of the series. I'm sure some of you have read my reviews/synopsis/thoughts of the books I have read so far; that said, the stories are pretty fresh in my mind.
So, I sit down, watch...
Before I start, what I am about to list are not complaints, but rather differences I saw in the show vs the comic book.
Episode 1 - Sleep of the Just
· At first I see the raven flying around with the white chest – hmm, that is not what Matthew looks like – come to find out later it was Jessamy, who is not in book 1.
· We are shown Morpheus going off to hunt the Corinthian, definitely not in book 1, is this a nod toward Sandman Overture (I have not read this yet, was told not to until I finished issue #75)?
· Nothing from page 3 of issue #1 was shown, nothing of Ellie Marsten’s, Daniel Bustamonte’s, Stephan Wasserman’s, or Unity Kincaid’s dreams.
· Morpheus in Berlin, Germany attempting to capture The Corinthian – not in book 1, again, is this in Overture?
· None of page 10 shown, those from page 3, shows how Morpheus being capture affected their dreams.
· Unity Kincaid’s race is changed – not an endless – so why?
· The Corinthian shows up to talk to Burgess about Morpheus – not in book 1 – in Overture?
· Who is the Blonde? Find out it’s Ethel Cripps but…not in book 1
· Burgess catches son talking to Morpheus, starts beating him with cane, son defends himself and pushes into Crystal dome, hits head hard, dies – not in book 1 – and if he hit is head on the crystal would he not have broken the circle around it…?
· Jessamy gets in the house, starts flying around, starts a fire, cause commotion, gets down stairs and starts flying and pecking at the crystal, Alex shoots Jessamy – not in book 1
· Alex says he will let Morpheus out if he promises not to hurt he and Paul, Morpheus can’t forgive him for killing Jessamy – not in book 1
· Looks as if Paul PURPOSEFULLY uses his foot to break the circle, in book 1 it was Burgess’s wheel chair that did so.
· In the show, Morpheus gives the guards dream eternal sleep, not in book 1.
· In book 1, Morpheus does give Alex eternal waking.
· Corinthian knows Morpheus is free, talks to Lucienne, not it book 1
· MANY other pages in book 1 NOT included in episode 1.
Episode 2 – Imperfect Hosts
· Corinthian visits Ethel Cripps to ask if she has Morpheus’ tools, she says no but – not in book 2
· Corinthian does not believe her, attaches, she uses amulet of protection on him – not in book 2
· When speaking to Lucienne, Morpheus states not one of his siblings came to his aid – not in book 2
· Shows that Morpheus takes his power back from Gregory, not in book 2.
· John Dee’s mother visit him in prison, sees how bad he looks, but does not give him anything – this was left out of episode 2.
· No Arkham Asylum, No Scarecrow
· Again, many things in the book left out of episode 2.
Episode 3 – Dream a Little Dream
· Big difference in the show vs the comic book because of Johanna Constantine, but I won’t bring up anything about it because John could not legally be used in the series.
· John Dee looks normal, not like someone exposed for too long to the power of the ruby – looks nothing like he did in episode 2, he was better in the fan film 24 Hour Diner (which I will get to later).
· John Dee’s mother visits him in prison, gives him the amulet of protection, ages and dies this does NOT happen in book 2, she dies and the amulet is delivered to him.
· Story of Rachel is completely different in show verses comic book.
