I remember my first time watching Heavy Metal War over 20 years ago. It was three in the afternoon and I'd been home from school for maybe a half hour. I watched in awe as these green contruction vehicles pulled into the construction yard and proceeded to steal equipment. Then, their booty secured, they transformed into the Constructicons. Scrapper barked one of my favorite lines in Transformers history, "Foolish man of flesh! If you interfere with us, you will be terminated!" he said to the forman after the man objected to the theft of his goods.
That made Scrapper the coolest Decepticon in my book back then. He still rates pretty high to this day.
The rest of the episode was just as fun. Megatron's wicked scheme to use the combined powers of the Decepticons in one-on-one combat against an unknowing Optimus Prime. The stakes? The loser and his army were to abandon Earth. But the absolute, most amazing part of the episode was the battle at the end between the Dinobots and Constructicons. It was pretty intense, so far as Transformer battles go, but then Scrapper took charge again, "Constructicons, transform! Phase one!" What the heck does that mean? What's phase one? "Now, transform! Phase two!"
And then the impossible happened, six construction vehicles merged into one, giant robot, the Decepticon warrior Devastator. He would have made short work of the Dinobots and Autobots were it not for one of Hound's hoograms and Prime's marksmanship. So, the episode ended with Decepticon and Constructicon alike sinking into a stream of magma. Thus ended the first season of the Transformers.
These days, I don't have any Dinobots or Constructicons, though I did in the past. I do however own two of the WST (World's Smallest Transformers) Dinorobots that are smaller, unofficial versions of the Dinobots. I picked up Commander and Desert Warrior (Grimlock and Snarl to you and me) at CybCon this year. For their opponents, I have a miniature knock-off of Devastator (who is a mix of orange and brown) I picked up at Big Lots for $4. The quality is surprisingly good for a knock-off, though not completely accurate, but accuracy isn't the norm for knock-offs.
I want two of the three remaining Dinorobots, not too keen on Slag - never have been, bu tit will be a while before they are released. I suppose if I do get the other two, I may as well get Slag, but I dunno. Hard to see, the future is.
