After a day of finding nothing to buy at six stores I visited today, except for a Mini-Con 2-pack on clearance to $1.90 after tax, my wife and I went to the Saturday service at our church, United Lutheran, and were treated to the Gospel of Luke, book 12, verses 13 through 23:
13 Someone in the crowd said to Him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me."
14 But He said to him, "Man, who appointed Me a judge or arbitrator over you?"
15 Then He said to them, "Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions."
16 And He told them a parable, saying, "The land of a rich man was very productive.
17 "And he began reasoning to himself, saying, 'What shall I do, since I have no place to store my crops?'
18 "Then he said, 'This is what I will do: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.
19 'And I will say to my soul, "Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years to come; take your ease, eat, drink and be merry."'
20 "But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your soul is required of you; and now who will own what you have prepared?'
21 "So is the man who stores up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God."
22 And He said to His disciples, "For this reason I say to you, do not worry about your life, as to what you will eat; nor for your body, as to what you will put on.
23 "For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing.
Needless to say, it made me feel rather silly that I spent most of Saturday running around in the heat, looking for toys. Then, thanks to the discussion at the service, I got to thinking about when we eventually move and all the stuff we'll have to pack. Man, I am not looking forward to those days. See, I've only moved twice in my life and while the first time was fun, the second wasn't so much and I can only imagine that the third time will be even less fun.
So, now I'm faced with a decision. Do I start selling off some of my things to make it easier down the line or do I keep going with what I'm collecting and just suck it up when the time comes? Why can't someone invent a teleportation device to save me the trouble?
