3. FEBRILE SEIZURE/ SPASM - Description of febrile spasms suffered by our child
Observed and recorded by webmaster, 26.03.95
Boy: born 18.12.91, 17 kg
09.30: 39.5°C/103.1°F, 250 mg paracetamol suppositories against the fever
12.00: 38.3°C/100.9°F
13.15: End of lunch (had not eaten very much) and preparation for afternoon nap, strong shivering fit during undressing
13.25: 39.5°C/103.1°F measurement not finished; 1/2 suppository Faustan (1/2*10mg)
13.30: One small twitch as temperature was being taken (tic),
after this, a fixed stare, febrile spasm!
4 min, white face; blue lips; non-responsive;
eyes and mouth half open;
hands slightly clenched
Reaction to finger being pressed under the nose:
- pupils moved approx. 3mm upwards
- very little movement below the chin
during
a spasm
13.35: 40°C/104°F mumbled when spoken to, afterwards shivering fit
13.40: Clicking his tongue, eyes closed, pupils large when eyelids were lifted up; no reaction when spoken to; heard apparent but calm speech
13.45: 5 mg Diazepam from a tube rectally applied after telephoning family doctor.
14.00: 39.9°C/103.8°F
14.15: 40.3°C/104.5°F; preparation for transport to hospital, Dresden Neustadt
14.30: 40°C/104°F 250 mg Eufipron suppositories (in hospital)
15.30: 38,8°C/101.8°F
Background:
- 3 cousins at that time with viral infection and high fever
- grandparents viral infection without a cold (grandmother: 39°C/102.2°F; grandfather: 40°C/104°F)
- brother 10 spasms between the age of 1 and 6; now 8 years old
- parents both suffered from febrile spasms (Mother: 2; father approx. 5)
History:
- Jan/Feb 1st febrile spasm questionable
1992 2nd febrile spasm
- June 1993 3rd febrile spasm + suspected meningitis; 9th-16th June inpatient treatment at hospital.
Environment: pharmacological factory in immediate vicinity (chimney)
Temperature increase: 1.7°C/35°F within 1 1/5 hours
