We are spending the day in Victoria, the capital of the Province of British Columbia. It is quite a small town, with a British influence. Afternoon tea is a feature, but we splurged on Vietnamese food.

There's a lot going on in the streets, including a marvellous percussion band, shown here.

The highlight of the day has been our visit to the Royal BC Museum, which is so wonderful that I forgot to take photographs. Derek came here in the seventies and has talked about it ever since. He is absolutely right. We have seen the BC natural history gallery and the First Nation exhibit.

The visit to the First Nations gallery was both a joy and a source of pain. The art and cutural objects are outstanding but this must surely be the first time that the destruction of a culture has been lovingly documented in print and photographs.

We are staying in Victoria tonight and beginning to head eastwards tomorrow.
