We got on the ferry after midnight last night. We are travelling south on the Matanuska, the same Alaska Ferries ship that brought us north.

Today I have been taking photos all the time. The weather is clear so we can see snow covered mountains that were invisible on the way up.

I have taken a lot of panoramic photos and classic calendar shots. The sea is very calm. We have seen some humpback whales blowing and breaching. We only see part of the back but we often see the flip of a tail or the spout of water.

This is hard to see but the trees around this lodge are full of bald eagles, dozens of them. We have seen groups of eagles on the waterfront but the sight of crowds of them gathering in the trees was amazing.

There is a large fishing industry here. We passed a number of small but very well equipped boats.

We also saw a log raft of cedar poles, contained by a link of poles and chains and towed behind a barge.

I met a lot of interesting people from all over the world on the boat but this lady generously shared a fascinating skill.

She is a member of the ship's staff on break, sitting in the sun, knitting such beautiful yarn that I stopped to admire it.

Now she is hand spinning fine wool from Uraguay, using a drop spindle . I've linked this but the instructions are not nearly as good as the demonstration.

Tonight we are sleeping on the boat again. The whole trip will take about thirty six hours, until lunchtime tomorrow.
