63 GMC Truck Restore

This is my 1963 GMC Custom cab. The Truck is all original except for the license plate (Someone stole the orginal), It has a 305 V6 engine with a 4 speed manual trans with granny. The Truck is the3/4 ton frame with a 4.10 rear end with a Posi. The Entire life of this truck has been in my family. My Grandfather bought the truck new in 1963 in San Jose, Ca. He owned the truck until his death and was then given to my father to hold for me until I turned of age to drive it. I learned to drive this truck in the almond orchards of Orland, Ca when I was 14 years old. In High School me and my dad did a partial restore of this truck. we gave the truck new paint and replaced all the wood in the bed. When I went to college the truck went into storage cause I bought a little car to commute. after College I drove the truck for a little while (that is when I took the pictures above). I put the truck back in storage and my father asked to borrow it. He used it for about 10 years as a yard truck where he worked. Once he retired he called me and asked if I wanted to pick up the truck. When I got the truck back I was not pleased. the truck had been beaten up and was in a sorry state. My father kept the engine tuned and changed the oil and that's about all he did. Before he gave it back to me he forgot to mention that he had hit various stationary objects and used my truck in ways a 45 year old should be not be used.

I almost junked it and probably would have, if it was not for history of the truck. Me and my wife started in on the body work, and found one major issue, RUST. the truck was in poor shape. when we started sanding we found the passenger lower cab corner had been eaten away by rust as well as the rocker panels and fenders. After stripping away the parts with major rust except for the doors (They were in good shape) this is what we had
