UPAACC - A Tradition of Excellence

Twenty three years ago the University of the Philippines Alumni Association of Central California (UPAACC) was only a vision of 25 charter members. The desire was (in 1982) to support and be involved with its beloved Alma Mater by way of service fellowship. The association was guided by the University’s vision and mission as it pursues to be the Philippines’ as well as Asia’s finest academe.

Leadership and exemplary service of its membership are the hallmarks of the 150-member association. It started with the trail blazing years of Norma Espiritu, the first elected president, followed by the late Crisologo Cabacungan, Max Parayno Jr., Corazon Galvez, Johnny Quijano, Rey Elizondo, August Lansigan, Pete Mayol and, now, Orly Dyoco. UPAACC was the recipient of many UPAA Service Award, recognizing the leadership performance of Norma Espiritu (1997), Pete Mayol (1998), Johnny Quijano (1999) and Max Parayno, Jr. (2000). This award honors the University of the Philippines alumnus for meritorious service.

UPAACC’s success as a leading UP Alumni organization is reflected in the “Most Outstanding Alumni Chapter Award” received in 2000. The plaque has the following citation:

“For actively pursuing abroad the goals of the UPAA through the various projects geared toward service to U.P. For its continuous support of the program of the University of the Philippines in the pursuit of academic excellence and developing leadership; and for bringing to their community abroad a piece of the nurturing Philippine sky and much of the UP spirit of service.”

As UPAACC moves into the new millennium, it is confident of a united support and commitment of the members to achieve the organization’s goals. A fine example of a long-standing mission is the UPAACC Crisologo Cabacungan Scholarship. It is a way of training future leaders of the nation, one youth at a time. UPAACC is also a regular donor of textbooks to various UP campuses. These books will make a difference in our young students’ academic enrichment. Most recent projects are computer donation for UP Mindanao and financial support for UP Baguio Student-Alumni Building Fund.

New ideas are brought to the table each year by the energized camaraderie of the membership, with the highest intention of support and commitment to the University through alumni activities.
