Fencing by Allan Skipp

Review by N. Bell

ISBN 081172834X, published 1997

This little 50 page soft cover is a wonderful introduction for beginners or anyone thinking about trying the sport. It has brief explanations about equipment, footwork, and the techniques and rules in each of the weapons, as well as a handy little glossary. The book is put out in association with Leon Paul, but manages to avoid pushing their products too much (just some shiny new weapons in the photos). The diagrams and photos are well done and clearly illustrate the points being made.

I have an earlier incarnation of this book from 1963, but back then it was the "Know the Game" series. It's worth buying new, though, just because the information is more up to date, and the diagrams are much better. Top marks for this one, and at about $8 Cdn, you can't go wrong.
