Manuel

Escrime Passion by Bruno Manuel

Review by N. Bell

ISBN 2-9505225-0-5, published 1990

I picked this one up at the Prieur store in Paris on a whim and was not disappointed. It appears to be a souvenir book from the world championships in Lyon in 1990. It has brief biographies of several important people in the French Fencing Federation, as well as some other little articles about... stuff. I'm vague because I don't speak a word of French, and as the entire book is in that language, I couldn't read any of it. I still love this book because of the middle chapter, "Escrime en noir et blanc." Bruno Manuel is a photographer par excelance, and the photos are among the best I have ever seen. The subjects range from examples of poor sportsmanship, sabreurs caught in mid-air, and even masks and blades being manufactured, all shot in vivid black and white. You may be able to order this one via the Prieur website. It was 170 francs or about $42.50 Cdn, not cheap, but a nice coffee table book for the salle.
