Sponsors & Write Before You Light
|
Getting quit with a 12 step program turns support into a way of life. Besides immersing yourself in a group of people to whom you can relate and exchange feelings with finding someone to lead you through is important. The keystone to this program is to have someone you can talk to that knows not only how you feel but has enough time around the this program to guide you with real time experience. We call these people sponsors. Sponsors should have a significant amount of quit time, experience with the 12 steps. In most cases they should be of the same sex to avoid issues that can come from the fragile state mind while quitting. Finding a sponsor can take some time and the first choice is not always the best choice so feel free to change as you and your sponsor feel right. To find a sponsor, try to IM someone for that or e-mail them. Most sponsors like to be asked in this fashion. See if you like what they are saying on the boards and in meetings. If you can relate to them. Sponsor generally will not respond to a post to the boards seeking one, as most feel that it to be very personal decision between the two individuals. Once you ask a person to sponsor you, try not to take it personal if they say they can't do it at this time. Sometimes people are unable to do it for various reason. Just move on to the next person. Have faith that HP is putting into place the right person for you. As for a write before you write list, the best way to get one is to IM someone asking if you can put them on your personal list as for a support buddy. People come and go in the program quickly, some stay for long periods of time. This list is ever changing. It is good to have at least 10 people somewhere that you can lean on for support in time of need. Your Friend in Recovery, Carol R |
