The Sri Maha Mariamman (goddess of Mercy) temple was ‘lost’ for
more than 50 years before it was discovered accidentally in the
mid 1960. It's was a oldest hindu temple in Kuching, Sarawak.
The temple’s location founded when Abi
bin Benggali, a Bidayuh hunter had sought shelter in the temple in 1968 during a
thunderstorm. He had taken an elephant statute home from the disused
temple. Then, he returned the statute to the temple in the next day as the
family members felt. This new spread to hindu residents in Matang. Soon,
the temple was re-opened for prayers on 4 December
1970.Finally, the
temple was taken over by the Hindu Temple Association in 1976. Since that day
the temple has been administered by this Association through a special Mount
Matang Mariamman Temple Committee.
