GIST
(Graphically Intelligence based Script Type face) is
the language technology mission of the Center for Development
of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Pune an institution of
Department of Electronics (DoE), Government of India.
From the very outset, this technology has had its sights
set on securing the future of every living language of
the world This pioneering technology has evolved over
times to eliminate all language barrier and provide a
complete solution for applications such as data processing,
word processing, DTP, graphic design, multimedia and
video-works on a wide range of platforms such as DOS,
UNIX, MAC, WINDOWS and custom hardware. Thus it brings
the actual benefit of computers to the common man, who
is not conversant with English.
The binding theme between all the GIST products is
the standardisation of various script codes for information
interchange (ISCII), their representation on screen
an printer (ISFOC), keyboard layouts for different
scripts (INSCRIPT) and Spell Checker dictionaries for
different languages. All these have been standardised
by C-DAC and have been accepted by Bureau of Indian
Standards (BIS) as well as the International Standards
Organisation (ISO) and the UNICODE Consortium. Based
on this technology a wide range of products have been
developed. All GIST products support the basic Indian
scripts namely Assamese, Bengali Devnagari, Gujarati,
Kannada, Malyalam, Oriya, Punjabi, Tamil, Telagu and
a few foreign scripts like Bhutanese, Sinhalese and
Tibetan. Gist products have cross compatibility and
common phonetic overlay for all Indian scripts which

ISFOC is a short form of 'Intelligence
based Script FOnt Code' and ISM (pronounced as 'ism' '‡—Ö´Ö')
is the short form of ISFOC Script Manager.
- ISM is
an Indian language interface designed to work with Windows
based applications in Indian Languages.
- Some supported applications
are MS Office, Lotus Smart Suite, PageMaker, Corel Draw etc.
- Some areas where ISM comes handy are: Publishing / Printing, Web

Processor This software has been created keeping in mind
the requirement s of individual users. This is an independent

to Internet. The desktop view of iLEAP has been made self
explanatory, such that at any moment the tools available
to the user are according to the kind of work being done
for example, 1. If the user is in sketch mode, only sketching
tools are available. 2. When the choice of language is
Hindi, the choice of keyboard layouts is only Hindi layouts,
the available fonts are that of Devnagari only, and the
word reference available is only Hindi. Such things make

MANTRA MANTRA
translates the English text into Hindi in a specified
domain of Personal Administration, specifically Gazette
Notifications, Office Orders, Office Memorandums and
Circulars. The utility of MANTRA has to be viewed in
the context of the Indian environment, its socio-economic
and demographic conditions, its historical background
and above all the transitory phase India is passing
through presently. Translating from one language to
another, particularly of a different family, covers
a very broad spectrum. The strategy adopted here is
- NOT WORD-TO-WORD... NOT RULE TO RULE.... but a LEXICAL
TREE-TO-LEXICAL TREE. MANTRA uses the Lexicalized Tree
Adjoining Grammar (LTAG) formalism to represent the
English as well as the Hindi grammar.

and presentation of the Dnyaneshwari using multimedia
technology.
C-DAC's National Multimedia Resource Centre (NMRC) has
been engaged in the multimedia authoring, editing of
musical recitation, text entry and integration of the
contents of Dnyaneshwari for the last 3 years. C-DAC
integrated both the volumes of CD Title, which include
