Addresses

The post office will recognize your address as XX University Mews, Philadelphia, PA  19104-4756.  You need not reference 45th & Spruce.

Finances

Mews assessments are $360 per year.  Make a check out to University Mews Association, and drop them in the mail box for house #30.
Ninety five percent (95%) of your Mews Assessment goes for trash collection and weekly sweeping.

Trash Collection (BFI)

When:   Monday between 7 and 8 am.
BFI holidays:  New Years, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, & Christmas.
Where:  In your utility closet, (or in front of it) as the trash is ripped open by squirrels.  Only the sweepers may leave bagged refuse under the
               overhangs next to houses 35, 36, 40, & 43.

What:    BFI will not take furniture and recyclables.  We are charged when we fill up more than two dumpsters on any day ($15/house/year).
Snow:   In case of a heavy snow BFI will not be able to roll their dumpster through the Mews.
Bring your garbage bags to 45th St.

City Recycling
Hot Line:  215-685-RECY

When:   Between 7:00 pm Monday night and 7:00 am every other Tuesday morning: 2/07/06, etc.; mark your calendar.

If Monday is a holiday (http://www.phila.gov/streets/) the pickup will be postponed to Wednesday.
Where:  Leave by Mews entrance driveway.
The green garbage can by #36 is for newspapers & magazines only.
Please bag your newspapers before depositing.
What:   Glass bottles & jars (rinsed, no lids), mixed paper (no plastic windows), aluminum & steel cans (rinsed), empty aerosol cans &
               paint cans (dried, lids off).
What NOT:  No plastics, waxed paper or corrugated cardboard.

Firehouse Recycling

When:   1st & 3rd Sat of the month, 8 am - noon.
Where:  50th & Baltimore
What:   Corrugated boxes (collapsed), plastic bottles (#1 & #2 only, rinsed), mixed paper.

As of July 2005, a slight change in the type of plastic containers recyclable at the Firehouse Farmers Market site has
been requested by the recycler (Blue Mountain) - the exact request language is quoted below, but basically
it boils down to:
  -  bottles only, no wide-top containers (e.g.,yogurt, cream cheese, Starbucks plastic coffee cups), even if #1 or #2
  -    no automotive product bottles (we've been back and forth on this one)
  -    no buckets or plant pots, even if #1 or #2
  -    no take-out food containers

  -
   no bottle caps

The take-out food containers are the flimsy, rectangular, clear-plastic containers, many of which are #5 anyway and historically have been pulled out of the recyclables and trashed anyway. Same with many of the yogurt-type containers. It's a shame about the other items, especially the buckets - however, we'll have to co-operate.

Here's the actual request:  "Bring only plastic containers marked with a 1 or a 2 on bottom with a  narrow top and wider bottom that contained water, milk, juice, soda,  laundry detergent, or bath products. Rinse out; no caps."

"Do not bring take-out food containers, plant pots, or buckets (wide at top) or plastics that contained automotive products, even if they are marked as a 1 or 2."

City Sanitation Dept

When:   Between 7:00 pm Monday night and 7:00 am Tuesday morning.
Where:  North side of Spruce St. (The Mews is on the south side.)
What:   Everything but tires.

City Holidays:  New Years Day, Martin Luther King Day, Presidents Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Columbus Day, veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.  FOR ALL HOLIDAYS:  Trash and recycling collections will be one day behind schedule for the remainder of the week.

Tire Recycling
Citizen Drop Off Center

When:   Mon-Sat, 8:00 to 4:00
Where:  1600 S. 51st St., off Grays Ave.
What:   Small furniture, building materials, refrigerators, hot water heaters, tires, etc.
