Scenes from East Chattanooga
January 13, 2002
Sunday, January 13, 2002 was "Lift Off" day for TVRM 610.  Four jacks were used at the corners to raise the frame high enough that the drivers could be rolled out.  (See last update for photos of the same procedure performed on
SR 630....Two major lifts in two weeks!  Way to go crew!)  Heavy preparation
on Friday and Saturday led up to the event, including fabrication of a lifting beam.  Unlike 630 (and most other locos), 610 does not have a frame bar
under the cab capable of allowing jacks to slide under for lifting.  The special beam was "slung" under the frame to provide a jacking surface on either side.
610 as seen from inside 630's boiler.
Did anyone notice the sign on the wall?  It says "It Can't Be Done"....but the apostrophe and "t" is crossed out, making the saying "It Can Be Done".  That's right...it can be done at TVRM.
All you need are four 35-ton jacks and a bunch of hardworking folks that are dead-set on doing it!
FYI: Both wheelsets (630 & 610) were removed to be cycled through the wheel shop this year.
