ANCIENT INDIAN LITERATURE
Our ancients had mastery
over various branches of knowledge
apart from the rich cultural heritage
and ethical standards of a high order.
The priceless treasure of
Indian classical literature
had always been a source of pride
for us down the ages.
In order to generate the interest
of young Indians in their literary heritage,
a selection of some of the classical items
has been attempted.
- SRI RAMODANTA: Autor not known.
Story of Rama is told in 200 slokas in 7 kandas
for beginners of Sanskrit Literature.
- HITOPADESA: Author Narayana.
Written between 13th and 14th Century A.D.
A collection of stories and fables -
said to be the later version of Panchatantra.
Hitopadesa means good advice.
Animals and birds are introduced here
with human manners and feelings.
- PANCHATANTRA: Author Vishnu Sharma.
Period between 2nd and 4th Century A.D.
A collection of stories and fables,
consists in 5 parts.
These stories are believed to have been
told by Vishnu Sharma to two young princes
to improve their worldly wisdom.
- RAGHUVAMSHAM: Author Kalidasa.
Period 6th Century A.D.
Kalidasa was one of the nine gems of King Vikramditya.
Other poetic works of Kalidasa are:
Kumara Sambhava, Megha Duta,Ritu Samhara.
His famous dramas are: Malavikagnimitra,
Vikramorvaseeya andSakuntala.
Raghuvamsam is the story of the
descendants of King Raghu
written in 19 cantos.
