Second journey to Australia on New Years Eve
The
Artist
I
decided to began taking Les as one of my subjects in Art.
It was only in a matter of 3-4 years a total of
200
or more sketches where produced during this time.
Amongst
Les, i managed to suppress a good amount of work, and found it
irresistible but to let
Les Hill know himself.
In
1998 i managed to cross over a letter together with 3 sketches
to
Australia. In January 1999, i had a letter returned and it was
the man himself. Les Hill.
A
personal letter suggesting that he is well and impressed with my works.

In
later commuting, it was in Australia i decided to venture
without my family and take off last year for the duration of
only one month. I decided to try and contact Les to meet,
and it was unfortunate how Les was unavailable to at the time.
It
was only too kind that this Father, with all
my thanks took the time to chat with me.
"Sorry
Les isn't in Sydney at the moment. Hes out doing something
with the production crew."
I
took out my numerous photos, ones of which i had taken of my
artwork.
He
smiles while he observes. "Yeah, they're fab. i like this one,
i
remember that day, because i was there with him."
He
looked at the racing picture (shown below), i said;
"yeah
i remember seeing you in that particular one, in that
magazine
i got back home, of you and Les together UK."
He
replied. "Yeah that's right! I really like that one."
At
this point i stood next to him. Mmm, big guy he is too. 6ft?
"Can
i take a photograph of you then?"
He
thought about it, then laughed. "Oh go on then! My wife is
inside
wondering what i am doing!" So he was great fun as i
stood
next to him. There he was with a cup or tea or his coffee.
"By
the way Les does look like you!" He laughed again and said
"No,
he looks like his Mum." He replied "Its nice to have
seen you
in
person, after all those photos."

Myself
with Les' Father. Australia 2000
Returning
home i decided to design a website corollating my material,
starting with my personal
collection
expanding with other materials from fans across the UK and Australia
Australia 2001
I
returned to the UK making a terrible decision whether to head off to
Australia once again.
After
all painful thoughts, and a position i had at home with the
Finance
team. It was as soon as i got back from Aus in 2000, I
prepared
to apply for Visa. Once again i set off with a 22hrs journey.
Japan,
Tokyo, Singapore (nice airports) but not until i stepped
my
foot into the breezy Sydney airport where the instant smell of
clean
air and the lovely summer of 46 degrees of sunshine. Quite
a difference to
leaving
the UK in snow and arriving in Sydney on New Years Eve.

Finance girls & I, taken a week before leaving Australia in 2000.
Its
Monday afternoon. Nice dry day by the water. Its
almost ready to meet Les.
Took
5 minutes and stood back, and watched him appear, grabbing a drink
from
the bar and sitting down comfortably. Until i walked over.
At
an instance he smiled. And likewise so did I.
"Ah!
Sara! Hi how are you?" pecked my cheek and we sat.
So
there is was. Les Hill, talking his way, as i sat and listened, dumb
struck
to say anything. And many would say it is out of
character for me.
Sipping
on my water and lemon, Les with his Cafe Latte, we spoke in general.
It
had occurred to me how down to earth and very polite Les is.
With just the
friendly
and overwhelming politeness this guy appeared to me what i
always
thought he would be.
it
was apparent to me how considerate this busy man was giving his time to
meet
me today. And also, talking about things that maybe
wish
hadn't been asked!!!!
Nevertheless.
"I am amazed to see those pictures, as i say, my Mother
loves
them, she has them up framed."
"I
feel so silly, I'm like a 16 year old." He had to laugh.
Slightly
embarrassed, the many questions i wanted to approach him with ,
generated
only
as far as my brain, and never hit the lips. Disappointed was
not the word.
"Can
you sign these pictures for me i really love these ones."
He
smiled and looked at them closely. "Sure."
With a real smiley grin, with quick
motion
he took to signing.
'To
Sara, thanx for all your hard work on the website, love Les.'
"May
i take a photo please?" Les got up without any hassle,
and took to stand
next
to me. His arm around my shoulders. "yeah, take a few,
just encase."
A
little disappointed with myself, but nevertheless, he looked and was extremely
worth
just looking at. He was intriguing. Behind the
face
is a well spoken man. One which i will not forget.
As
sparkling as he looked up on our TVs here from the early 90s and so forth,
Here
he is in great form. The Australian sun seems to be doing him well.
Talking
of his current
interests,
we sit as he realises the time.
"I
am meeting someone in the next hour."
With
his last works, thanking him for being the character he was, we shook
hands
and he was off on his ventures.
And to those that remember Les on our screens, this is something for all his old fans or existing fans to see. Thank you Les.
